Ezekiel‘s vision of a river of life flowing from the Temple shows the water getting deeper and deeper as it gets farther and farther out. Our experience of God's grace and gifts should be something like that. As we are carried farther and farther along in our journey of faith and trust, we are meant to enter more deeply into the fulfillment of God's plan for our life. And we all know where this journey ultimately ends. Heaven!
This Lent, some of us may be "up to our ankles" in this river. Others may be wading through it, and still others may be swimming freely in its life-giving current. Yet, no matter where we are now, God is calling us to go deeper. Through our ongoing conversion; through our obedience, our faithfulness, and our acts of mercy, we can all draw closer and closer to our destination. No doubt we will experience trials and setbacks, but these are only to refine us for the deeper waters and make us fit for our heavenly home.
How can we guard against just "treading water" By making sure that we are always moving! God wants us to start tasting his goodness and using the gifts and talents he has given us now. We should start experiencing more freedomand of course, more oppositionthe more we commit ourselves to spend time with him, to follow him, and to help others know him better too. By depending on the Holy Spirit, we'll always be sure that we are operating in his power and grace.
No matter where we find ourselves in the waters of life, we must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and his call to life on high. That is our goal; there will be no more pain and no more sorrow there, and we'll be free of the sins and failings that beset us here. The river will never stop flowing there as we are immersed in the glory of God. As long as we keep our faith alive, and keep pushing out into the waters of life, we can be certain we will one day experience all the fullness God desires for us.

예언자 에제키엘이 본 환시에서, 성전에서 흘러나오는 생명의 강은 멀리 흘러가면 갈수록 점점 더 깊어집니다. 우리가 하느님의 은총과 은사를 경험할 때도 마치 이와 같아야 합니다. 우리는 신앙과 신뢰의 여정을 멀리 걸어가면 갈수록, 하느님께서 우리의 삶에 마련하신 계획의 완성을 향해 점점 더 깊이 들어가게 됩니다. 그리고 우리는 모두 이 여정이 궁극적으로 어디에서 끝나는지 알고 있지요. 바로 천국입니다!
이 사순절에 어떤 사람들은 이 강에 ‘발목까지’ 담그고 있을지 모릅니다. 또 어떤 사람들은 강물에서 걸어 다니고 있을 것이며, 또다른 사람들은 생명을 주는 강물에서 자유로이 헤엄치고 있을지도 모릅니다. 그러나 지금 우리가 어디에 있든, 하느님께서는 더 깊이 들어오라고 부르십니다. 계속되는 회개를 통해, 주님께 순종하고 성실함으로써, 자비를 베풂으로써 우리는 목적지에 점점 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있습니다. 틀림없이 시련과 좌절을 겪겠지만, 그것은 단지 보다 깊은 물에 들어갈 수 있게 우리를 단련하는 과정이며, 천국의 집에 어울리게 만들어 주는 것입니다.
어떻게 해야 우리는 ‘선헤엄’을 치지 않도록 경계할 수 있을까요? 반드시 쉬지 않고 움직여야지요! 하느님께서는 우리가 당신의 선하심을 맛보고 우리에게 주신 은사와 재능을 쓰기 시작하기를 원하십니다. 우리는 이제 더 많은 자유를 경험하기 시작해야 합니다. 그리고 물론, 그 반대되는 것도 해야 합니다. 즉, 지금보다 더 많이 주님과 시간을 보내고, 그분을 따르며, 다른 이들이 주님을 더 잘 알게 되도록 도와주는 일에 헌신해야 합니다. 우리는 성령께 의지함으로써 반드시 주님의 권능과 은총 안에서 움직이게 될 것입니다.
생명의 강물 어디쯤에서 우리 자신의 모습을 찾을 수 있든지 간에, 우리는 예수님의 모습과 또 그분께서 부르시는 저 높은 곳의 삶에서 우리의 시선을 떼지 말아야 합니다. 그곳이 우리의 목적지입니다. 거기에는 고통도 슬픔도 없을 것이고, 이승에서 우리를 괴롭히는 죄와 타락에서 자유로워질 것입니다. 우리가 하느님 영광 안에 잠겨 있으면 그곳으로부터 흘러나오는 강물은 결코 멈추지 않을 것입니다. 우리의 믿음이 생기 넘치도록 하여 생명의 강을 따라 계속 앞으로 나아가기만 하면, 우리는 언젠가 하느님께서 우리에게 바라시는 모든 충만함을 경험하리라고 확신할 수 있을 것입니다.

해 주시니 감사합니다.
이 사순 시기에 당신과 함께
더 깊은 물로 들어갈 수 있게
저를 재촉해 주십시오!” |
