Why did Elisha tell Naaman to wash seven times in the Jordan River? Why not six, or eight, or just once, for that matter? It's true that in Scripture, the number seven represents completeness. The world was created in seven days, and the Sabbath falls on the seventh day. Nevertheless, we might still wonder, why did he have to repeat this action so many times?
Not until we look more deeply at what Elisha was asking of Naaman do we realize why it is significant. Elisha wasn't just going to stretch out his hand and heal Naaman; he required something from him. He was asking Naaman to be humble and patient, and to follow his request no matter how difficult it might be for him. He wanted Naaman to act on the belief that the God of Israel was in control.
In the same way, God often asks something of us that will help bring us in touch with his healing power. When we go to Confession, for instance, we may bring certain instances of sin­and of course we will be forgiven. But if we want to be freed from the grip of a sinful habit, one trip to the confessional may not be sufficient. We may need repeated "washings" through Reconciliation. We may need to repent of underlying attitudes that have given rise to this pattern. Or perhaps we need to take a proactive stance, avoiding the occasions in which we are most vulnerable to the sin.
We've all dealt with persistent patterns of sin. Perhaps we are gripped by a tendency towards impatience or anger. Perhaps we constantly find ourselves complaining or gossiping. Whatever our transgression, we should not be discouraged. Jesus told us to forgive "seventy times seven times," so we know he understands our weakness and is with us in our struggle.
Remember, too, that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is about more than simple pardon for our sins. Jesus wants to pour out healing every time we confess. Like a good doctor, he knows that our healing may require patience and persistence. Not all medicines work immediately, after all.

예언자 엘리사는 왜 나아만에게 요르단 강에서 일곱 번 몸을 씻으라고 하였나요? 그런 일이라면 여섯 번이나 여덟 번, 혹은 단 한번으로는 왜 안 될까요? 성경에서 일곱이라는 숫자가 완전함을 상징한다는 것은 맞습니다. 세상은 7일 동안에 창조되었고, 안식일은 일곱째 날마다 돌아옵니다. 그래도 궁금증은 여전히 가시지 않지요. 그는 몸을 씻는 행동을 왜 그렇게 여러 번 되풀이해야 했을까요?
엘리사가 나아만에게 요청한 것이 무엇인지 깊이 생각해 보지 않는다면 그것이 왜 중요한지 깨달을 수 없습니다. 엘리사는 그저 나아만에게 손을 뻗어 병을 낫게 해 주지 않았습니다. 그에게서 무엇인가를 요구했습니다. 엘리사는 나아만에게 겸손하며 인내하기를, 또한 자신의 요청이 비록 어렵더라도 그에 따르기를 요구하고 있었던 것이지요. 이스라엘의 하느님께서 다스리신다는 믿음을 좇아 나아만이 행동하기를 엘리사는 바라고 있었습니다.
하느님께서는 같은 식으로, 당신 치유의 힘을 우리가 접할 수 있도록 돕는 무엇인가를 우리가 하기를 요청하십니다. 가령, 고해를 하러 가면 우리는 여러 가지 지은 죄를 사제 앞에 가져가 용서를 받겠지요. 하지만 진정으로 죄의 습성에서 벗어나고 싶다면 고해소에 한 번 다녀오는 것으로는 충분하지 않을 겁니다. 고해성사를 통해 되풀이해서 죄를 ‘씻는’ 것이 필요합니다. 죄의 습성을 만들어 내는 근본적인 태도를 뉘우쳐야 합니다. 어쩌면 자신에게 가장 취약한 유혹에 놓이지 않도록 사전에 적극적으로 피하려는 정신 자세를 가져야 합니다.
우리는 누구나 되풀이해서 과오를 저지르는 습성을 지니고 있습니다. 참을성을 잃거나 화를 잘 내는 경향에서 헤어나지 못하는 수도 있고, 끊임없이 불평을 하거나 뒷말을 하는 버릇을 버리지 못할 수도 있습니다. 우리의 허물이 무엇이든지 결코 용기를 잃지 말아야 합니다. 예수님께서 “일곱 번씩 일흔 번”이라도 용서하라고 말씀하신 것을 보아도, 그분은 우리의 약함을 이해하시며 죄의 습성에서 벗어나고자 애쓰는 우리와 함께하신다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
또한 고해성사는 단순히 죄를 용서하는 정도로 그치지 않는다는 것을 명심하십시오. 예수님께서는 우리가 죄를 고백할 때마다 상처를 치유해 주고 싶어하십니다. 훌륭한 의사처럼, 병이 나으려면 인내심을 갖고 꾸준히 노력해야 한다는 것을 예수님께서도 아십니다. 어쨌든 약효가 금세 나타나는 약은 없으니까요.

찬미합니다! 제가 얼마나 여러 번
과오를 범하든 당신은 저를 용서하십니다!
제게 당신의 치유하는 능력을 쏟아 주시어,
당신의 사랑과 은총 속에 성장하게
해 주십시오.”
