Can you imagine being asked to build an ark in the middle of a dry land? Yet Noah was convinced that because God had asked him, God would give him the wisdom and strength he needed to complete the task. Noah didn't run to his sons for help in designing the ark and choosing the right materials. No. he relied on God to give him the exact plan.
The disciples, too, had seen the power of God when Jesus multiplied the loaves to feed first five thousand people, then four thousand. They understood that rabbis often used the image of bread to talk about God's wisdom and his power to provide for his people. As faithful Jews, most of them had been brought up to seek counsel, teaching, and advice from their religious elders ­ "bread" for their lives.
But who had shown that he could supply an overabundance of bread? Jesus! If he could provide so much food, how much more could he give wisdom and strength to those who came to him! Why should they want to content themselves with the "yeast" of the Pharisees (Mark 8:15)?
Jesus has all power and wisdom and strength, and he's ready to pour it out on you. When God asks something of you, he is right there to give the grace and ability to accomplish it. As he did with Noah, he will stay with you and help you come up with a plan to bring it about. As he did with the disciples, he will not only say, "you give them something to eat." He will multiply whatever you bring to him so that it is more than sufficient for the task (Mark 6:37-43). We may be tempted to run to others for help. But God is urging us to trust in the power and grace he gave us in baptism. We really can be bread for the world. We really can give "something to eat" to all who are hungering for the presence and power of the Spirit in their lives. So ask the Holy Spirit to show you today how great and awesome is his power in you. Then listen as he sends you into the world to feed the hungry.

your power and strength.
I call to you with an open heart,
and ask you to teach me, fill me,
and use me today."

육지 한 복판에 방주를 만들라는 명을 받은 당신 모습을 상상할 수 있습니까? 하지만 노아는 하느님께서 명하셨으니 그 임무를 완수하는 데 필요한 지혜와 힘도 주실 것을 확신했습니다. 그는 방주를 설계하고 알맞은 자재를 고르는 일을 도와달라고 아들들에게 달려가지도 않았습니다. 하느님 친히 정확한 설계를 해 주시리라 믿었습니다.
제자들도 예수님께서 빵의 기적을 일으키시어 처음에는 5천 명을, 다음에는 4천 명을 먹이셨을 때 하느님의 권능을 눈으로 보았습니다. 그들은 랍비들이 당신 백성을 먹이시는 하느님의 지혜와 능력을 이야기할 때 자주 빵의 이미지를 사용하는 것도 이해하고 있었습니다. 제자들의 대다수가 독실한 유다교 신자들이었고, 그들은 종교 지도자들에게 인생의 ‘빵’인 권고와 가르침, 조언을 구하면서 자라났으니까요.
그러나 하느님께서 먹고도 남을 만큼 빵을 주실 수 있음을 보여 준 것은 누구입니까? 바로 예수님이십니다! 그분께 오는 자들에게 그토록 풍성한 음식을 주실 수 있다면 지혜와 힘은 얼마나 더 많이 주실 수 있겠습니까! 그들이 왜 바리사이들의 “누룩”(마르 8,15)으로 만족해야 합니까?
예수님께서는 모든 능력과 지혜와 힘을 가지고 계시며 언제라도 그것을 당신에게 부어주실 채비를 하고 계십니다. 주님께서 당신에게 무언가를 청하실 때는 이를 수행하는 데 필요한 은총과 능력도 더불어 주십니다. 노아에게 하셨듯이, 늘 당신 곁에 머무시며 계획을 세우고 방법을 찾도록 도와주십니다. 또한 제자들에게 하셨듯이, “너희가 그들에게 먹을 것을 주어라.”고만 하지 않으시고 당신이 그분께 내놓은 것에 기적을 일으키시어 시키신 일에 쓰고도 남을 만큼 풍성하게 만들어 주십니다.(마르 6,37-43) 더러는 주님이 아닌 다른 사람에게 달려가 도움을 청하고 싶기도 하겠지요. 그러나 하느님께서는 우리가 세례 때 받은 은총과 능력에 의지하라고 촉구하십니다. 우리는 진정 세상이 필요로 하는 ‘빵’이 될 수 있습니다. 우리는 진정 자신들의 삶에서 성령의 현존과 힘을 갈망하는 모든 이에게 ‘먹을 것’을 줄 수 있습니다. 그러니 당신 안에 있는 성령의 힘이 얼마나 놀랍고 위대한지 보여 달라고 오늘 성령께 청하세요. 그리고 주린 이들을 먹이라고 당신을 세상으로 보내시는 성령의 목소리에 귀 기울여 보세요.

보여 주셨습니다. 열린 마음으로
주님께 간청하오니,
오늘 저를 가르치고 채우시며
주님의 도구로 써 주십시오.”
