One minute he is Saul the zealous Pharisee, bent on destroying the followers of Jesus and the next, he is blinded by a blazing light, falls to the ground, and hears the Lord speaking his name. After he meets Christ, his life is turned upside down, and he ends up spreading Christianity halfway around the world. No doubt, Paul's conversion story is one of the most dramatic in the history of the church. But do we take it seriously?
It's a good question to ask, especially as so many thingsincluding our life of faithtend to get watered down by the various conveniences and compromises that the world offers. By contrast, Paul's life was so radical that it may seem like a Hollywood movieand just as divorced from our everyday lives. After all, we know what a strong personality Paul was; we could say that he was just as extreme after his conversion as beforehe was just headed in a different direction.
But we all sense that there is more to it than that. Throughout his Christian life, Paul allowed Jesus to change him to the point where he could write, "It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me"(Galatians 2:20). Brothers and sisters, that is the way it must be with us. The spiritual life Paul speaks of is really a love affair with Jesus; it's about becoming a new person, not just a "cleaned up" version of our old self.
Saints like Paul are not meant to be the "oddballs" of the church. They're supposed to be the norm! Each of us, in his or her particular vocation, is called to become holy, so we should not set our sights too low. It's been said that the first requirement for sainthood is the desire to become one. We must have the goal, as Paul did, of reaching "the heavenly calling of God in Christ Jesus"(Philippians 3:14). In truth, God's vision for us is even bigger than our own. He wants to do so much more with our lives than we can imagineif we will only trust him to do it!

just an ideal! Pour out your Spirit on me
that I may be converted more fully.
Change my heart
so that I will serve you alone!" |
바오로 사도는 한때 사울이라는 이름으로, 예수님을 따르던 사람들을 박해하려고 혈안이 되었던 열성적인 바리사이였습니다. 그런데 어느 순간 눈부신 빛 때문에 앞을 볼 수가 없어 바닥에 엎어져서 주님께서 그의 이름을 부르시는 것을 들었습니다. 그렇게 그리스도이신 예수님을 맞이한 후, 그의 삶은 완전히 바뀌어 지구의 반을 돌아다니며 그리스도교를 전파하는 일로 생을 마쳤습니다. 바오로가 회심한 이야기는 교회 역사상 가장 극적임에 틀림없습니다. 그렇지만 우리는 이것을 진지하게 받아들이고 있습니까?
이것은 참 좋은 질문입니다. 특히 우리의 신앙생활을 포함하여 아주 많은 것들이 세상이 제공하는 편리함과 타협안에 희석되어 가는 이때 더욱 그렇지요. 바오로 사도의 삶은 이와는 대조적으로 너무나 급진적이어서 할리우드 영화에나 나올 법해 보이고, 따라서 우리의 일상생활과도 전혀 관련이 없어 보입니다. 무엇보다도, 우리는 바오로 사도가 얼마나 강인한 사람이었는지를 압니다. 회심 후에도 그는 전과 마찬가지로 극단적이었다고 말할 수 있으니까요. 단지 다른 방향을 향했을 뿐이죠.
그러나 우리는 모두 거기에는 그 이상의 무엇이 있다는 것을 느낍니다. 바오로는 그리스도인으로서 자신의 온 생애를 통하여, “이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니라 그리스도께서 내 안에 사시는 것입니다.”(갈라 2,20)라고 말할 수 있을 만큼, 예수님께 자신을 변화시키도록 맡겨드렸습니다. 형제자매 여러분, 우리도 그렇게 되어야 합니다. 바오로가 말하는 영적 삶은 진정으로 예수님과 사랑에 빠지는 것입니다. 그것은 예전 모습에서 단지 ‘깨끗해지는’ 것이 아니라, 아주 다른 새로운 사람이 되는 것입니다.
바오로와 같은 성인들은 교회에서 ‘별난 사람’으로 여겨지지 않습니다. 오히려 그분들이 표준으로 생각되어야 하지요! 우리 모두는 각자의 특별한 성소에서 거룩해지도록 부름 받았기 때문에, 우리의 눈높이를 너무 낮게 잡지 말아야 하겠습니다. 성인이 되기 위한 첫 번째 조건은 성인이 되기를 바라는 것이라고 합니다. 우리도 바오로 사도처럼 “하느님께서 그리스도 예수님 안에서 우리를 하늘로 부르시어 주시는 상을”(필리 3,14) 받으려는 목표를 가져야만 합니다. 진실로 하느님께서 우리를 위하여 마련하신 계획은 우리가 세운 계획보다 훨씬 큰 것입니다. 그분께서는 우리의 상상을 넘어서는 아주 많은 것을 우리 삶을 통하여 하고자 하십니다. 그분께서 그렇게 하시도록 우리가 믿고 맡기기만 한다면 말이지요!
“주님, 거룩해진다는 것이 한낱 이상이 아님을
저는 알고 있습니다! 저에게 주님의 성령을
부어 주시어 제가 더욱 완전히 회심하게
하여 주십시오. 제 마음을 변화시키시어
주님만을 위하여 살게 하여 주십시오.” |
