칼릴 지브란의 예언자 중에서
그대들의 아이라고 해서 그대들의 아이는 아닌 것,
아이들이란 스스로 갈망하는 삶의 딸이며 아들인 것.
그대들을 통하여 세상에 왔을 뿐, 그대들로부터 나온 것은 아니니라.
그러므로 비록 지금 그들과 함께 있을지라도
아이들이란 그대들의 소유는 아닌 것을.
그대들은 아이들에게 사랑을 줄 순 있으나 그대들의 담겨진 생각까진 쏟아주지 못하리라.
왜냐하면 아이들은 스스로의 생각을 가졌으므로,
그대들은 아이들에게 육신의 집을 줄 수 있으나 영혼의 집까지 줄 순 없다.
왜냐하면 아이들의 영혼은 내일의 집에 살고 있으므로.
그대들은 결코 찾아갈 수 없는, 꿈속에서도 가 볼 수 없는 내일의 집에.
그대들이 아이들과 같이하려 애써도,
아이들을 그대들의 복제품이 되게 애쓰지 말라.
삶이란 결코 뒤로 되돌아가진 않으며 어제에 머물지도 않는 것이므로.
그대들은 활, 그대들의 아이들은 마치 살아있는 화살처럼
그대들로부터 과녁을 향하여 앞으로 나아간다.
그리하여 사수이신 신은 펼쳐진 무한이 길 위에 한 표적을 겨누고,
그분의 온 힘으로 그대들을 구부리는 것이다.
그분의 화살이 보다 빨리, 보다 멀리 날아가도록.
그대들은 오히려 사수이신 신의 손길에 구부러짐을 기뻐하라.
왜냐하면 그분은 날아가는 화살을 사랑하시는 만큼
또한 흔들리지 않는 활도 사랑하시므로. |

On Children

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable. |
