As Jesus’ disciples, we are called to be his witnesses in the world today. We are to be like salt that savors (Matthew 5:13) or like a city on a hilltop, visible to all (5:14). In other words, we are to bring the presence of Christ indeed, even be his presenceto those around us. One reader, a man who owned a salvage business, recently wrote of an extraordinary way he experienced this call as he salvaged materials from an old church that was being demolished:
“l took a crew of men with me to the church to dismantle and remove the things that I wanted to save. When I entered the church, I looked at the altar and was surprised to see a life-sized statue of Christ that had no arms. It was the type of statue where Jesus is standing up straight with his arms extended wide. Since the arms on this statue were removable, I figured they must be around the church somewhere, so I had my crew look for them under the church pews, in the confessionals, everywhere but no one could find them. The rectory was behind the church, so I decided to ask the pastor who resided there. He told me he knew nothing about it.
I was thinking, “Why, Lord? Why is it left to me to do something with this statue? Why would anyone remove the arms and not come back for the statue? Who is going to want a statue of you with no arms?" When my crew finished removing the pews and the stained-glass windows, they began to dismantle the communion railing. I stood there at the rail and looked up at the statue. Again I thought that it was a shame someone would do such a thing, and I was very sad. At that moment I heard a voice inside me say, "John, don't you know that you are my arms?"
Tears began to flow down my face. It was a moment I will never forget. I am retired now, but every time I see a statue with its arms extended, I am reminded that all of us are the arms of Christ."

to all those around me. Help me
to reach out to everyone I meet today.
May I truly be your arms and hands to them."

예수님의 제자들과 마찬가지로 우리도 오늘날의 세상에서 그분의 증인이 되도록 부름 받았습니다. 우리는 맛을 내는 소금과 같고(마태 5,13), 모두가 볼 수 있는 산 위에 자리 잡은 마을과 같습니다.(5,14) 바꾸어 말하면, 우리는 주위 사람들에게 그리스도의 현존을 모셔오는 사람들, 아니, 바로 그분의 현존이 되어야 합니다. 얼마 전에 폐품 재활용 사업을 하는 한 독자가 폐허가 된 한 낡은 교회 건물에서 쓸 만한 물건을 수집하던 중 이러한 부르심을 감동적인 방법으로 겪은 체험담을 이렇게 글로 써 보냈습니다.
“나는 일꾼들을 데리고 건질 만한 물건들을 떼어 오려고 교회로 갔습니다. 성당 안으로 들어갔을 때 제단에 실물 크기의 예수상이 있는 것을 보았는데, 놀랍게도 양팔이 없었습니다. 그것은 예수님께서 똑바로 서서 두 팔을 크게 벌리고 계시는 모습의 성상이었지요. 그 성상의 팔은 떼었다 붙였다 할 수 있는 것이었기에, 그 팔이 성당 어딘가에 있을 거라고 생각한 나는 일꾼들을 시켜 의자 밑이나 고해소 안 등 구석구석 샅샅이 찾아보라고 했습니다. 그러나 아무도 성상의 팔을 찾지 못했지요. 사제관은 성당 뒤편에 있었습니다. 그래서 나는 그곳에 살았던 신부님에게 물어보기로 했습니다. 하지만 그분도 거기에 대해서는 아는 바가 없다고 하시더군요.
나는 이런 생각에 잠겼지요. ‘주님, 왜입니까? 왜 이 성상이 제게 넘겨졌습니까? 팔을 떼어놓은 사람은 왜 다시 갖다 붙이지 않았을까요? 팔 없는 당신 성상을 누가 갖고 싶어하겠습니까?’ 일꾼들이 의자와 스테인드글라스 창문들을 떼어내어 옮긴 뒤, 제단 앞의 난간을 철거하기 시작했습니다. 나는 난간 앞에 서서 성상을 바라보며 다시 생각에 잠겼지요. 누군가가 그런 일을 저질렀다는 것이 몹시 유감스러웠고 나는 아주 우울해졌습니다. 그 순간 내 안에서 한 목소리가 들려왔습니다. ‘요한아, 네가 바로 나의 팔이라는 것을 너는 알지 못하느냐?’
눈물이 뺨을 타고 흘러내리기 시작했습니다. 그것은 절대로 잊을 수 없는 순간이었습니다. 난 이제 정년퇴직을 했지만, 두 팔을 벌리고 서 있는 예수성심상을 볼 때마다 우리 모두가 그리스도의 팔이라는 사실을 머리에 떠올립니다.”
“주님, 당신의 현존을 제 주위의 모든 사람에게
모시고 가게 해 주십시오.
오늘 만나는 모든 이들에게 가까이 다가가도록
저를 도와주시어, 제가 그들에게
당신의 참된 팔과 손이 되게 해 주십시오.”
