When we read this deion of what St. Barnabas did, it can appear a little dry to us, like a news flash on the early Church: Barnabas is sent to Antioch to learn about the new converts there. When he arrives, he is stirred by the faith of the people, and encourages them not to lose heart. Because of his preaching and witness, a large number of people are added to the church. None of this should surprise us, after all; isn't that what apostles were supposed to do?
But the facts about what Barnabas accomplished don't tell us very much: It's understanding how he did it that can inspire us. We are told that Barnabas was "filled with the Holy Spirit and faith"(Acts 11:24). These two things were the key elements to Barnabas' success in evangelization. The Holy Spirit filled him with God's love, and his faith in God's promises and power allowed him to share that love with others. Barnabas became a saint because his heart was open to everything God had to give him.
We know that evangelism is not a "past-tense" phenomenon. However, if we want to make it a part of our lives, we also need to let the Holy Spirit work in us, and we need to cultivate a lively, trusting faith. The Spirit teaches us; he gives us the words to speak; and he tells us who to speak them to. He inspires us to bring Jesus to the world through our example of service and caring. It's our faith that matters the most, though. With it, we can move the mountains of unbelief that tell us, "You'Il never make a difference!"
Have we become insensitive to the Spirit? We can open ourselves to his presence in so many ways: through times of quiet prayer, and through meditating on God's word. Has our faith grown dull? Perhaps we haven't asked or expected God to use us lately. But let's look for the opportunities that are already there: Wherever God has put us, he has also put people and situations that will challenge us and help us to grow. We are his hands and feet, and we can be his shining lights ­ just as Barnabas was!

"Holy Spirit, you are the master builder.
Teach me to cooperate with you,
and show me my part
in building the kingdom of God!"

바르나바 성인의 활동을 기술한 이 말씀을 읽노라면 마치 초대 교회에 대한 뉴스속보처럼 다소 무미건조하게 들립니다. 바르나바는 안티오키아 교회의 새 입교자들 실태를 알아보라고 파견되었는데, 안티오키아에 도착한 그는 그곳 신자들의 믿음을 보고 기뻐하면서, 모두 굳센 마음으로 주님께 계속 충실하라고 격려하였습니다. 그의 설교와 증언으로 많은 사람이 교회로 인도되었지요. 허나 이것은 그리 놀랄 일이 못 됩니다. 어쨌든 사도들이 해야 할 일이 바로 그런 것 아니겠습니까?
그러나 바르나바가 ‘무엇을’ 성취했나 하는 사실들은 우리에게 그다지 많은 것을 시사하지 않습니다. 그가 그 일들을 ‘어떻게’ 했는지 깨닫는 것이야말로 우리에게 감동을 줍니다. 우리는 바르나바가 “착한 사람이며 성령과 믿음이 충만한 사람”(사도 11,24)이라는 말을 들었습니다. 이 두 가지가 바르나바가 복음 전파에 성공하게 된 관건이었지요. 성령께서 바르나바에게 하느님의 사랑을 가득 채워 주셨고, 그는 하느님의 약속과 권능을 굳게 믿었기 때문에 그 사랑을 다른 사람들과 나누게 되었던 것입니다. 바르나바는 마음을 열고 하느님께서 주시는 것은 무엇이나 다 받아들였기 때문에 성인이 되었습니다.
우리는 복음 전파가 ‘과거 시제’로 끝나버린 일이 아님을 잘 알고 있습니다. 하지만 그것을 우리 삶의 한 부분으로 만들고자 한다면 우리 역시 성령께서 우리 안에서 역사하시도록 해 드려야 하고, 활기차고 믿음 가득한 신앙을 키워나가야만 합니다. 성령께서는 우리를 가르치시고, 무슨 말을 할지 알려 주시며, 그 말을 누구에게 할지도 알려 주십니다. 성령께서는 우리에게 봉사와 보살핌의 본보기가 되어 세상에 예수님을 전하라고 북돋아 주십니다. 무엇보다 중요한 것은 우리의 믿음입니다. 우리는 “넌 결코 변화를 가져올 수 없어!”라고 말하는 불신의 산을 믿음으로 움직일 수 있습니다. 
우리는 성령께 둔감해지지는 않았는지요? 우리는 참으로 다양한 방식으로 성령의 현존에 우리 자신을 열 수 있습니다. 조용히 기도하는 시간을 통해서나 하느님 말씀을 묵상하면서 말이지요. 우리의 믿음이 무뎌졌나요? 어쩌면 이즈음에는 우리를 써 주십사 하느님께 청하지 않았거나, 기대조차 하지 않았는지도 모릅니다. 하지만 이미 주어진 기회들을 찾아봅시다. 하느님께서는 우리를 보내시는 곳 어디에나 우리의 성장을 자극하고 도와줄 사람과 상황도 마련해 두고 계십니다. 우리는 그분의 손과 발입니다. 우리는 바르나바가 그러하였듯이 주님의 빛나는 광채가 될 수 있습니다!

제가 당신의 협조자가 되도록
방법을 가르쳐 주시고,
하느님 나라를 세우는 데에
제가 할 몫이 무엇인지 보여 주십시오.”
