"You are not far from the kingdom of God."(Mark 12:34)
If Jesus' words to the scribe don't surprise us, it's possible that we're not paying enough attention! His usual reaction to members of Jerusalem's religious establishment was to correct or rebuke them. But here he is, listening to a man who had just asked him what might be another "trick" question, answering him carefully, and encouraging him on his journey of faith. So what does this unusual encounter reveal?
From the scribe's remarks, we can tell that this fellow was genuinely interested in Jesus. He even agreed with him that loving God and one's neighbor are equally import!ant. Clearly, he had some understanding of the truth that Jesus was preaching. But Jesus didn't just congratulate him­he encouraged him to go deeper. He knew that to be "not far" from the kingdom of God is like being an exhausted traveler who finds himself "not far" from an oasis. How will he get to the water? Obviously, not very far by his own efforts.
What the scribe lacks is Jesus. He is close to the kingdom, because he knows what God requires of him, but he still hasn't entered in. To be "in" the kingdom of God means knowing that only Jesus's perfect righteousness meets the requirements of the commandments: His whole life, from his birth to his death on the cross, was an act of total obedience to God and love of neighbor. To be "in" the kingdom also means to accept that salvation that Jesus was offering. It appears that this scribe had just encountered Jesus, and for all we know he may have been just moments away from taking that step.
It is tempting to give up on people who seem to be far from God. Yet like the scribe, they may be just one or two steps away! It's better that we do as Jesus did, and meet people where they are instead of trying to judge their spiritual condition. It's better, too, that we take heart from anything they say or do that reveals a desire for the Lord or an agreement with his words. Rather than despair­or condemn­it is far better to encourage and support.

“너는 하느님의 나라에서 멀리 있지 않다.”(마르 12,34)
예수님께서 이 율법 학자에게 하신 말씀이 놀랍지 않다면, 그건 당신이 이 구절을 건성으로 읽은 탓일 겁니다! 예루살렘의 종교 지도자들에 대한 예수님의 반응은 대개 그들을 바로잡아 주거나 질책하기 위한 것이었지요. 그러나 여기서는 또 다른 ‘간계’일지 모를 질문을 던진 사람에게 예수님께서는 귀 기울여 주시고 진지하게 대답하시며 그의 신앙 여정을 격려하셨습니다. 이 이례적인 만남은 무엇을 의미할까요? 
율법 학자의 질문에서 우리는 그가 예수님께 진정으로 관심을 가지고 있음을 볼 수 있습니다. 그는 하느님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이 똑같이 중요하다는 예수님의 말씀에 공감하기까지 했습니다. 주님께서 가르치시는 진리를 어느 정도 알아들었던 게 분명하지요. 그러나 예수님께서는 그를 칭찬하는 데 그치지 않고 그에게 더욱 정진하라고 격려하십니다. 예수님께서는 하느님 나라에서 ‘멀리 있지 않다’는 것은, 자신이 오아시스에서 ‘멀리 있지 않다’는 것을 알게 되었지만 이미 기진맥진해 버린 여행자와 같음을 알고 계셨습니다. 그는 어떻게 해야 물가에 닿겠습니까? 분명히 혼자만의 노력으로는 그리 멀리 가지 못합니다.
이 율법 학자에게 없는 것은 예수님입니다. 그는 하느님께서 자신에게 무엇을 요구하시는지 알기에 하느님 나라에 가까이 와 있는 셈이지만, 아직 그 안에 들어가지는 못했습니다. 하느님 나라 ‘안’에 있다는 것은, 예수님의 온전한 의로움만이 계명의 요구조건을 충족시킨다는 것을 깨닫고 있음을 의미합니다. 탄생에서 십자가상 죽음까지 예수님의 전 생애가 하느님께 대한 완전한 순종과 이웃 사랑의 발로였으니까요. 하느님 나라 ‘안’에 있다는 것은 또한 예수님께서 베푸시는 구원을 받아들이는 것을 의미합니다. 이 율법 학자는 이제 막 예수님을 만난 것처럼 보이고, 우리가 아는 한 그 단계에 도달하기 바로 직전에 와 있는 사람인 듯합니다.  
하느님에게서 멀리 떨어져 있는 듯이 보이는 사람들에 대해서는 그만 포기하고 싶은 생각이 들기 십상입니다. 하지만 이 율법 학자처럼 그들 또한 예수님을 만나기 일보 직전에 있는 사람들일지도 모릅니다! 그러니 우리도 그들의 영혼 상태를 판가름하려 하기보다는, 예수님께서 그러셨듯이 그들이 현재 처한 상태 그대로 그들과 만나는 것이 좋습니다. 또한 주님을 갈망하거나 주님 말씀에 공감하는 말이나 행동을 내비치면 그것을 진지하게 받아들이는 것도 좋겠지요. 실망하거나 비난하기보다는 그들에게 용기를 북돋워 주고 지지하는 편이 훨씬 더 바람직합니다.

“예수님, 당신께서는 사람들을
당신과 더 가까워지게 하는 기회를
결코 그냥 지나치지 않으셨습니다.
저도 그와 똑같은 사랑을 보일 수 있게
도와주십시오. 주님, 주님을 찾는 사람들에
대한 연민이 제 마음 속에서 커가도록
해 주십시오.”
