"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?"(Acts 19:2)
Answer that question for yourself. We know that we receive the Holy Spirit through the sacraments of baptism and confirm!ation. We know that he gives us gifts enabling us to live the Christian life. Yet how is it that so many of us end up living as if the Spirit didn't even exist?
The believers from Ephesus told Paul: "We have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit"(Acts 19:3). If you read Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, you may notice that it is an exhortation to take up the new life that had been given them and live in the power and authority of the Holy Spirit. They, as well as we, have been adopted as God's children through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:5) and brought from death to life (2:1-5). All division and hostility among the members of God's household has been abolished (2:11-21). Each of us is called to live in unity and to put off the old self and put on the new man created to be like Christ (4:22-24). We are to be "subject to one another out of reverence for Christ"(5:21). And finally, we are to stand firm in Christ and take up the spiritual armor he has given us (6:10-11). Now that's what living in the Spirit should look like!
Then, why is it that even with such a dramatic set of exhortations, we can come to the end of a day feeling worn out because we have been trying to accomplish everything on our own power? Could it be that some part of us still doesn't know that there is a Holy Spirit to help us and guide us? Thank God he is so patient and kind! All we have to do is repent, and try a little harder the next day.
What do you want the Holy Spirit to do for you? Do you believe you can experience his presence and power? His help and guidance? Even if you have had prior experiences of the Spirit, there is always more he wants to do in your life. Don't wait for Pentecost. Go ahead and ask him to fill you right now.

"Holy Spirit, please come into my heart
in a deeper way.
Fill me again with your light and your love.
Help me to rely on you as this day unfolds."

“여러분이 믿게 되었을 때에 성령을 받았습니까?”(사도 19,2)
당신 자신에게도 이 질문을 한번 해 보세요. 우리는 세례성사와 견진성사를 통해 성령을 받았음을 잘 알고 있습니다. 성령이 우리에게 그리스도인의 삶을 살 수 있도록 하는 은사를 주셨다는 것도 알고 있습니다. 그런데 어째서 우리 중 그리도 많은 이들은 마치 성령은 존재하지도 않는다는 듯이 살게 된 걸까요?
에페소 신자들은 바오로 사도에게 “성령이 있다는 말조차 듣지 못하였습니다.”(사도 19,3)라고 대답하였습니다. 바오로 사도는 에페소 신자들더러 자신들에게 주어진 새로운 생명을 단단히 붙잡고 성령의 권능과 권위 안에서 살아가라고 간곡하게 권유하고 있다는 것을 우리는 사도가 그들에게 보낸 편지에서 알 수 있습니다. 우리와 마찬가지로 그들 역시 예수 그리스도를 통하여 하느님의 자녀가 되었고,(에페 1,5) 죽음에서 다시 살아났습니다.(2,1-5) 하느님의 가족 간에는 분열과 적개심이 모두 허물어졌습니다.(2,11-21) 우리 각자는 옛 인간을 버리고 그리스도와 같은 모습으로 만들어진 새 인간을 입고 일치 안에서 살아가라고 불리움 받았습니다.(4,22-24) 우리는 “그리스도를 경외하는 마음으로 서로 순종”(5,21)해야 합니다. 그리고 마침내 그리스도 안에 굳건히 서서 그분께서 우리에게 주신 영적인 무기로 완전히 무장해야 합니다.(6,10-11) 바로 이것이 성령 안에서 살아가는 사람의 모습입니다!
그러면 이토록 인상적인 일련의 권고 말씀을 가지고도, 우리가 여전히 혼자 힘으로 온갖 것을 해내려고 애쓰다 지쳐버린 채로 하루를 마치곤 하는 것은 도대체 왜일까요? 우리 안의 어떤 부분은 성령께서 우리를 도우시며 인도하신다는 사실을 아직도 깨닫지 못하고 있는 걸까요? 감사하게도 하느님께서는 참으로 끈기 있으시며 인자하십니다! 우리가 할 일이란 그저 돌이켜 반성하면서 매일매일 전날보다 조금 더 열심히 노력하는 것뿐입니다.
성령께서 당신에게 무엇을 해 주길 원하나요? 당신도 성령의 현존과 권능을 체험할 수 있다는 것을 믿나요? 성령의 도우심과 인도는 어떠한가요? 전에 성령을 체험한 적이 없다 해도, 성령께서는 늘 당신의 삶에서 많은 일들을 하고자 하십니다. 성령 강림까지 기다리지 마세요. 가서 지금 당장 당신을 성령으로 가득 채워 주십사 청하세요.

당신의 빛과 사랑으로 저를 다시 채워 주십시오.
새로이 펼쳐지는 오늘 하루,
당신에게 기댈 수 있도록 도와주십시오.”
