"The whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul."(Acts 4:32)
This sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? Yet how could the early church be otherwise? Many of these believers had seen the risen Lord. They had been filled with the Holy Spirit, and had worked miracles in his name. How could they help but join together and experience a deep unity? The impact of the gospel on their lives was so powerful that it completely changed their relationshipsthey wanted to lay down everything for one another and for Christ.
To many of us, this level of commitment seems unrealistic. We couldn't imagine doing something as radical as selling our homes and giving away the proceeds. And while we do have friendships with other believers, most of us are not as closely bonded to them as these apostles were to one another. But we can't deny that we are part of the body of Christ. In some way, we are meant to be connected. As one songwriter put it, "I disregard the Lord's command, if I walk through my journey untouched by human hands."
The truth is, if we are trying to live the Christian life on our own, we are missing something vital. We are missing the strength and inspiration we can receive from other believers. And they are missing what we can give to them! Fellowship is not something we are obligated to partake in; it's something we need. The letter to the Hebrews apply to us as well: "Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another"(Hebrews 10:24-25).
We can be confident that God will provide for us "according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus"(Philippians 4:19). Some of the greatest riches we have can be found in our brothers and sisters. So why not get to know them a little better? Whether it's going out for coffee with someone we've met at Mass or committing to a Bible study or prayer group, chances are the Holy Spirit is leading us to share more of our lives with others, not less.
"Jesus, I can't follow you by myself.
Lead me to others who are committed
to you, so that we can share our struggles
and my victories."

“신자들의 공동체는 한마음 한뜻이 되었다.”(사도 4,32)
이 말씀은 사실이라고 하기엔 너무 근사하게 들리지 않나요? 하지만 초대교회는 그럴 수밖에 없었을 겁니다. 당시 신자들 가운데 많은 이가 부활하신 주님을 뵈었고, 성령을 가득히 받았으며, 그분의 이름으로 기적을 일으켰으니까요. 그런 그들이 한마음 한뜻이 되어 깊은 일치의 삶을 살지 않고 배길 수 있었겠습니까? 복음이 그들의 삶에 미친 영향은 그들의 인간관계를 송두리째 바꾸어 놓을 정도로 막강해서, 그들은 서로를 위해 그리고 그리스도를 위해 모든 것을 다 내어놓고 싶어했습니다.
하지만 대개 우리 같은 사람들에게는 그런 정도로 투신하는 것이 비현실적으로 보일 테지요. 집을 팔고 수입을 포기하는 것 같은 급진적 행동은 상상도 할 수 없으니까요. 우리가 아무리 다른 신자들과 친교를 나눈다 해도, 사도들이 서로에게 지녔던 그런 친밀한 관계는 아닐 것입니다. 하지만 우리가 그리스도의 지체라는 사실은 부인할 수 없으며, 어떤 의미에서 우리는 서로서로 결속되어 있을 수밖에 없습니다. 어느 작사가는 이렇게 노래했지요. “누구의 손길도 스침 없이 나만의 여정을 걷는다면, 그건 바로 주님의 계명을 소홀히 여기는 것이라네.”
사실, 자기 식대로 신앙생활을 하려 한다면 우리는 아주 중요한 무엇을 놓치게 됩니다. 우리 편에서는 다른 신자들에게서 받을 수 있는 힘과 영감을, 그들 편에서는 우리에게서 받을 수 있는 것을 놓치는 것입니다! 우정이란 의무적으로 나누어야 하는 것이 아니라, 우리가 필요로 하는 것입니다. 바오로 사도가 히브리인들에게 보낸 다음의 편지글은 우리에게도 마찬가지로 해당됩니다. “서로 자극을 주어 사랑과 선행을 하도록 주의를 기울입시다. 어떤 이들이 습관적으로 그러듯이 우리의 모임을 소홀히 하지 말고, 서로 격려합시다.”(히브 10,24-25)
우리는 하느님께서 “그리스도 예수님 안에서 영광스럽게 베푸시는 당신의 그 풍요로움”(필리 4,19)을 우리에게도 베풀어 주실 것을 믿습니다. 우리는 우리의 가장 소중한 보화를 형제자매들 안에서 발견할 수 있습니다. 그러니 그들과 좀더 가까이 지내는 것은 어떨까요? 미사에서 만난 신자들과 커피를 마시러 가든지 성경공부나 기도 모임을 하든지 간에, 성령께서는 우리의 삶을 다른 사람들과 더 많이 나누도록 이끌어 주십니다.
“예수님, 제 힘만으로는
주님을 따를 수 없습니다.
주님께 헌신하는 분들에게 저를 인도해 주시어,
우리의 노력도, 저의 승리도 함께
나누게 해 주십시오.”
