How did most of us come into this world? By passing through our mother's birth canal and being guided by the hand of a doctor. And how do most of us come into the kingdom of God? By being born from above by the power of the Holy Spirit, through the guidance of our heavenly Father.
How and when this rebirth occurs is something that various Christian traditions understand differently. For instance, an Evangelical Christian might say he is born again when he "accepts Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior." A member of a nondenominational or charismatic church might say she is born again when she is "baptized in the Spirit" and receives the gift of tongues as a confirm!ation. The words may be different, and the expectations may vary, but each person is reflecting on his or her own experience of God bringing someone from darkness to light.
As Catholics, we understand that sacramental baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is the means by which we are born from above (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1262-1270). Every Easter, in fact, the church asks believers to renew their baptismal promises as a way of reminding ourselves of what it is that we have received and how we have received it. By renewing these promises, too, we have a regular opportunity to embrace and deepen the grace that we received when we were baptized. It is our opportunity to confess that baptism is not the end but the beginning of our faith journey. Just as our birth is the beginning of our earthly life, so too is our baptism the beginning of our spiritual life. And just as a baby needs physical nourishment, so do we need spiritual nourishment if we want to grow up and become mature believers.
If you have been baptized but don't feel "born again," you may want to check for obstacles that may be impeding the flow of the Spirit in your life. Examine your life and ask the Spirit to uncover whatever sin, hurts, or other traumas that may be at the root of the problem. Through Confession, let God sweep away anything that hinders your full participation in and enjoyment of the kingdom of God!

Send forth your Spirit and we shall be

우리는 어떻게 이 세상에 나왔을까요? 어머니의 산도(産道)를 거쳐, 그리고 의사의 도움을 받아 이 세상에 태어났습니다. 그렇다면 하느님 나라엔 어떻게 갈까요? 하늘에 계시는 아버지의 인도를 받아 성령의 힘으로 위로부터 태어남으로써 가게 됩니다.
언제 그리고 어떻게 이 새로운 탄생이 이루어지는지를 두고는 다양한 그리스도교 전통에 따라 이해를 달리합니다. 예를 들면, 복음주의 교회에서는 ‘예수 그리스도를 개인적으로 주님과 구세주로 받아들일 때’ 새롭게 태어난다고 합니다. 특정 종파에 속하지 않는 교회나 은사 교회의 신자들은 ‘성령 안에 세례를 받고’ 그 증거로 방언의 은사를 받을 때 새로 태어난다고 말하기도 합니다. 표현이 다르고 기대가 다양할 수 있으나, 각기 인간을 어두움에서 빛으로 인도하시는 하느님께 대한 자신들의 경험을 반영하고 있습니다.
가톨릭 신자인 우리는 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 세례성사를 받음으로써 위로부터 태어난다고 믿습니다.(가톨릭 교회 교리서, 1262-1270항) 실제로 교회는 부활절 때마다, 우리 신자들이 하느님에게서 받은 것이 무엇이며 그것을 어떻게 받게 되었는지 되새겨 보게 하기 위해, 세례 때 한 약속을 갱신하도록 합니다. 우리는 그렇게 함으로써 세례 때 받은 은총을 받아들이고 이를 더욱 깊이 깨닫는 기회를 정기적으로 갖게 됩니다. 이 갱신은 세례가 우리 신앙 여정의 종착점이 아니라 시작임을 고백하는 기회이기도 합니다. 탄생이 이 세상 삶의 시작인 것처럼, 세례 또한 영적인 삶의 시작입니다. 성장해서 성숙한 신앙인이 되고자 한다면, 어린 아이에게 물질적 자양분이 필요한 것처럼, 우리에게도 영적 자양분이 필요합니다.
세례는 받았지만 ‘다시 태어남’을 실감하지 못한다면, 무엇이 당신의 삶에 성령께서 흘러들어오지 못하게 막고 있는지 점검해 보고 싶어질 겁니다. 그렇다면, 당신의 삶을 되돌아보고 죄나 고통, 혹은 다른 마음의 상처 등 문제의 근본 원인이 되는 것은 무엇이든 들춰내 주십사 성령께 청하십시오. 당신이 하느님 나라에 완전히 동참하고 나아가 그것을 누리는 것을 가로막는 것은 무엇이나 쓸어내 주실 수 있게 고해성사를 통해 하느님께 맡겨드리세요!
“성령님, 오시어 당신을 믿는 이들의 마음을
성령으로 가득 채우시어,
저희 안에 당신 사랑의 불이
타오르게 하여 주십시오.
주님의 성령을 보내시어, 저희가 새로워지고
또한 온 누리가 새롭게 하여 주십시오.”
