How would you respond if Jesus told you what he told the Pharisees? "You will die in your sin.… Where I am going you cannot come.… You belong to what is below.… I have much to say about you in condemnation." You might be more than a little offended by such straight, unvarnished talk. But John tells us that at least to some people in Jesus' audience that day, his words had the exactly opposite effect: "Is he was saying these things, many believed in him"(John 8:30).
It may not be apparent to us, but when Jesus spoke to the Pharisees, his heart was filled with compassion for them. He could see through their self-deception, and the truth of his words penetrated them with divine power. It's possible that Jesus has been speaking that way to us during this season of Lent as well.
If we have spent the last weeks in the true spirit of Lent, the journey has not always been a comfortable one. We may have heard Jesus ask us, "Have you loved your brothers and sisters as much as you should? Have you been more concerned with your own comfort than you have cared about the hungry, the homeless, or the needy? Have you spent time with me in prayer?"
Even if we have tried to close our ears to Jesus' questions during the past few weeks, there is still time to respond to him. We simply have to open ourselves to his Holy Spirit and allow him to flood us with his love and grace. Then, when he points out our sins and failings, we won't hear words of criticism but words of encouragement that give us the power to change. Instead of defeat and frustration, we will be filled with hope and confidence that we really can achieve the goals he has set for us.
As we near the end of our Lenten journey, let's decide to listen for Jesus' still, small voice. After all, he speaks to us because he wants us to become like him, not because he wants to condemn us. He is a loving, merciful Savior!

"Lord Jesus, open my ears
to hear your words of encouragement
and hope. Soften my heart
so that I can take up my cross,
and follow you to Calvary."

예수님이 바리사이들에게 이야기한 것처럼 여러분에게 말씀하신다면 여러분은 어떻게 반응하겠습니까? “너희는 자기 죄 속에서 죽을 것이다. … 내가 가는 곳에 너희는 올 수 없다. … 너희는 아래에서 왔다. … 나는 너희에 관하여 이야기할 것도, 심판할 것도 많다.” 아마도 그토록 직설적이고 꾸밈없는 말에 조금 기분이 상한 정도를 넘어설 것입니다. 그러나 요한에 의하면, 그날 예수님의 말씀을 들은 청중 가운데 적어도 일부는 예수님의 말씀에서 정반대의 효과를 보았습니다. “예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하시자 많은 사람이 그분을 믿었다.”(요한 8,30)
우리에게 뚜렷이 보이지는 않겠지만, 예수님이 바리사이들과 이야기를 할 때 그분의 마음은 그들에 대한 연민으로 가득 차 있었습니다. 예수님은 그들의 자기기만을 꿰뚫어볼 수 있었고, 그분 말씀이 담고 있는 진리는 거룩한 힘으로 그들의 마음을 꿰찔렀습니다. 예수님께서 이 사순 시기 동안에 우리에게도 이와 마찬가지로 말씀하시는 것이 얼마든지 가능합니다.
우리가 사순의 참된 정신으로 지난 몇 주간을 보냈다면, 그 여정은 늘 편하지만은 않았을 것입니다. 아마도 예수님께서 이렇게 물으시는 소리를 들었을 테지요. “너는 너의 형제자매를 마땅히 사랑해야 할 만큼 사랑하였는가? 너는 굶주린 이, 집 없는 이, 궁핍한 이를 걱정하기보다는 자신만의 안위를 더 신경 쓰지 않았는가? 기도 속에서 나와 함께 시간을 보냈는가?”
지난 몇 주 동안 예수님의 이런 질문에 귀를 막으려고 했더라도, 그분께 응답할 수 있는 시간은 아직 남아 있습니다. 단지 성령께 우리 자신을 열고 그분의 사랑과 자비가  우리에게 밀려들도록 하면 됩니다. 그러면 그분이 우리의 죄와 실수들을 지적하실 때, 우리는 비판의 소리를 듣는 것이 아니라 변화하도록 힘을 주는 격려의 말씀을 듣게 될 것입니다. 좌절감과 패배감이 아니라, 하느님이 우리를 위해 세워두신 목표를 진정 이룰 수 있으리라는 희망과 자신감으로 가득 찰 것입니다.
사순의 여정을 마무리하는 이 시점에서, 우리 모두 예수님의 조용하고 작은 목소리에 귀 기울이기로 합시다. 아무튼 그분은 우리가 그분과 같이 되기를 원하시기 때문에 우리에게 말씀하시는 것이지, 우리를 비난하시려고 말씀하시는 게 아닙니다. 그분은 사랑에 넘치며 자비로운 구세주이시니까요!

“주 예수님, 저의 귀를 여시어,
격려와 희망을 주시는 당신 말씀을
들을 수 있게 하여 주십시오.
제 마음을 부드럽게 하시어,
저의 십자가를 짊어지고
골고타 언덕까지 당신을 따를 수 있게
하여 주십시오.”
