Jesus is such a magnificent teacher! We can't help but learn from him. He not only teaches us by his word but also by example what it means to be a committed, and loving servant of the Father.
In today's reading, after a day of arguing and debating with Jesus, we read that "each of them went home"(John 7:53). Jesus, on the other hand, whose work was always to do the will of the Father, didn't simply go home. He withdrew to the Mount of Olives, a quiet peaceful place, to come before his Father in prayer. He knew that there in the Father's presence, he would be assured of God's love, strengthened for the challenges ahead, and revived in his desire to work tirelessly to build the kingdom. Meanwhile, his opponents slept soundly in their beds, probably giving very little thought to what had happened that day.
Being followers of Jesus, we who love him and are committed to him must also work tirelessly to pursue the same goals that so occupied Jesus' heart and mind. There is much work to be done. However, as Jesus taught us by his own example, we first must go and pray. We must come into the peaceful presence of the Almighty, and be so filled with his love that doing his will becomes not a burden or a hardship but rather a privilege and an honor.
And where can we experience prayer more deeply than in the Mass? Here, gathering in the presence of Jesus and our brothers and sisters, we have a unique opportunity to unburden ourselves of obstacles, fears, and anxieties. We have a unique chance to be renewed and revived by hearing God's word. We also have the ultimate privilege of receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, taking him into our very hearts and bodies. How we are nourished! How much love is poured out upon us here! How peaceful we become here! And, most import!antly, how deeply we become empowered to "go in peace to love and serve the Lord".

"Father, you have called us to be healers,
to be teachers, and to be fishers of men.
At Mass tomorrow, may we know
your peace. Give us confident
assurance of your love,
so that we will be more determined
and dedicated than ever to do your will
and announce your gospel."

예수님은 정말 대단한 스승이십니다! 우리는 그분에게서는 배울 수밖에 없습니다. 그분은 말씀을 통해서뿐만 아니라, 손수 모범을 보임으로써 하느님 아버지의 헌신적이며 사랑받는 종이 된다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 우리에게 가르쳐 주십니다.
오늘의 말씀에서 우리는, 예수님과 하루 종일 토론하고 논쟁한 뒤에 “그들 모두 집으로 돌아갔다”는 구절을 읽었습니다.(요한 7,53) 반면에, 늘 하느님 아버지의 뜻을 행하는 것이 업인 예수님은 그냥 집으로 가지 않으시고, 조용하고 평화로운 올리브 산으로 물러가서 기도하며 하느님 앞에 나아갔습니다. 그곳, 하느님 아버지의 현존 안에서, 하느님의 사랑을 확인 받고, 다가올 도전에 맞설 힘을 얻으며, 하느님 나라 건설을 위해 지치지 않고 일하려는 염원이 되살아난다는 것을 그분은 알고 계셨으니까요. 그 시각, 그의 적들은 아마도 그날 일어난 일들에 대해서는 거의 아무런 생각도 하지 않은 채, 각자의 잠자리에서 깊은 잠에 빠져 있었습니다.
예수님을 사랑하고 그분에게 헌신하는 신자인 우리 또한 예수님의 마음과 정신을 사로잡은 것과 똑같은 목표를 추구하기 위해 지칠 줄 모르고 일해야 합니다. 해야 할 일은 많습니다. 하지만 예수님 자신이 모범을 보이시며 우리에게 가르쳐 주신 것처럼, 우리는 우선 기도를 하러 가야 합니다. 우리는 전능하신 하느님의 평화로운 현존으로 들어가서, 그분의 뜻을 행하는 것이 짐이나 고난이 되지 않고 오히려 특권이며 영광이 되도록 그분의 사랑으로 가득 차야 합니다.
그런데 미사에서보다 더욱 깊이 기도를 체험할 수 있는 데가 있습니까? 우리는 미사에서, 현존하시는 예수님과 우리의 형제자매들과 더불어, 근심과 두려움, 장애물을 벗어놓을 수 있는 진귀한 기회를 갖습니다. 하느님의 말씀을 들음으로써 새로워지고 되살아나는 다시없는 기회를 얻습니다. 또한 예수님을 바로 우리의 몸과 마음으로 받아들이는 성체성사를 통해 예수님을 영접하는 궁극적인 특권을 누립니다. 우리는 미사를 통해 얼마나 많은 자양분을 얻고, 얼마나 많은 사랑을 받는지요! 미사에서 우리는 얼마나 평화로워지는지요! 게다가 가장 중요한 것은, “평화로이 돌아가서 주님을 사랑하고 섬기라”고 힘을 북돋아 주신다는 것입니다!

“하느님 아버지, 당신은 병을 낫게 하는 사람,
가르치는 사람, 사람을 낚는 어부가 되라고
우리를 부르셨습니다.
내일 미사에서 당신의 평화를 깨닫고
싶습니다. 우리가 어느 때보다
더 확고하고 헌신적으로 당신의 뜻을 행하고
당신의 복음을 전할 수 있게,
당신의 사랑에 대해 굳건한 확신을 주십시오.”
