Most of us have an "enemy" or two who don't like us very much, and who make our lives unpleasant or difficult. Very few of us, though, have to deal with someone actually trying to kill us. Jesus had such enemies, and therefore he acted cautiously (John 7:1). Their threats were serious, so he sent his kinfolk on ahead to Jerusalem without him (7:3-9). He seems to have had no intention of giving anyone a chance to kill him.
But then, something changed his mind (John 7:10). Perhaps the Holy Spirit spoke to him. Despite the danger, Jesus was obedient, even going into the Temple and teaching (7:14).
How could he do that? Because he knew how to hear his Father clearly, and he trusted him absolutely. Jesus staked his whole life on the Father's desire to protect and deliver him long enough for him to accomplish what he was sent to do (John 7:30).
What a great opportunity we have, during Lent, to develop and improve our ability to hear, obey, and trust God! Perhaps today we could examine our lives and repent for times we haven't lived according to what we know God wants. Perhaps today we could take a couple of chances in obeying what we think God is saying to us. Our experience will reinforce the truths that we do know and will teach us even more about how the Holy Spirit speaks to us.
One practical way to learn to hear, trust, and obey God is to write down a few things: What do I think the Holy Spirit is saying to me? What did I do about it? And what was the result? Perhaps you could keep a small notebook or pad of paper next to your bed or in some other convenient spot. At the end of your prayer, jot down what the Spirit said. Then, at the end of the day, make a brief note of any prayer that was answered, any steps you took in response to the Spirit's leading, and any results you noticed. Some days, you might have nothing to record, or only missteps (but we learn even from those). But before too long, you will have a book of the miraculous!

"Holy Spirit, I want to hear from you.
Teach me, lead me,
guide me through my days.
Help me to trust and obey you,
that I may accomplish
what you created me for."

우리 대부분은, 우리를 별로 좋아하지 않거나 우리의 삶을 불쾌하고 어렵게 만드는 ‘적’이 한두 명 있긴 해도, 실제로 자신을 죽이려고 하는 누군가와 대적해야 하는 사람은 거의 없습니다. 그러나 예수님께는 그러한 적들이 있었고 그래서 매우 신중하게 행동하셨습니다.(요한 7,1) 그들의 위협이 심각하였기 때문에 예수님께서는 당신 없이 형제들만 먼저 예루살렘에 가도록 했습니다.(7,3-9) 어느 누구에게도 자신을 죽일 기회를 주지 않으시려 했던 것 같습니다.
그러다가 무엇 때문인지 그분은 마음을 바꾸셨습니다.(요한 7,10) 성령의 말씀이 있었는지도 모르지요. 예수님께서는 위험을 무릅쓰고 순종하여, 성전에 올라가 가르치기까지 하셨습니다.(7,14)
어떻게 그렇게 할 수 있었을까요? 그분은 아버지의 말씀을 분명하게 들을 줄 아셨고, 아버지를 절대적으로 믿었기 때문입니다. 예수님은 자신이 이 세상에 띠고 온 사명을 완수할 수 있을 때까지 충분한 시간 동안 자신을 보호하고 구해 주시겠다는 하느님의 뜻에 자신의 온 생명을 거셨습니다.
사순 시기는 우리가 하느님의 말씀을 듣고 따르며 믿는 능력을 키울 수 있는 아주 좋은 기회입니다! 오늘 우리는 우리의 삶을 돌아보고, 하느님께서 무엇을 원하시는지 우리가 아는 바대로 살지 않았던 때를 회개할 수 있습니다. 오늘 우리는 하느님께서 무엇을 말씀하시려는 건지 우리가 느끼는 대로 따르는 기회를 몇 번 가져 볼 수도 있습니다. 그런 체험들로 인해, 우리가 이미 알고 있는 진리가 더욱 굳건해지고, 성령이 우리에게 어떻게 말씀하시는지 더욱더 잘 알게 될 것입니다.
하느님의 말씀을 듣고, 하느님을 믿으며, 하느님께 복종하는 실천 방법 하나는 다음 몇 가지를 적어 보는 일입니다. ‘내 생각에 성령이 나에게 하시려는 말씀은 무엇인가? 그것에 대해 나는 어떻게 행동하였는가? 결과는 어떠했는가?’침대 옆이나 다른 손 닿는 곳에 작은 공책이나 메모지를 두고 사용할 수 있을 것입니다. 기도하고 나서 성령이 하신 말씀을 메모하십시오. 그런 다음 하루가 끝날 무렵에, 기도에 응답받은 내용이나, 성령의 이끄심에 응해 당신이 행한 일들, 혹은 눈에 띄는 어떤 결과들을 간단히 적으십시오. 어떤 날은 기록할 것이 아무것도 없거나 실수들만 적게 될지도 모릅니다.(하지만 그런 데서도 배울 게 있습니다.) 그러나 머지않아 여러분은 기적의 책을 갖게 될 것입니다!

저의 하루하루를 통해 저를 가르치시고,
인도하시며, 이끌어 주십시오.
당신을 믿고 순종하여 제가 창조된
목적을 이룰 수 있게 도와주십시오.”
