Picture the crowd as they watched Jesus cast a demon out of a mute person, and then saw the fellow begin to speak. You would think that would be enough to convince them of his divine power. But immediately, some asked for a sign from heavenas if what he did wasn't already a sign! Others declared that he was using the devil's power to cast out the demon. So who do you think was at work here besides Jesus?
If you answered the devil, you're right! He loves to stir up animosity and mistrust. He doesn't want anyone to believe in God's power, so he plays on our suspicions. He may go by a variety of namesLucifer, the Evil One, Father of Lies, the Accuser of the Brethrenbut they all point to the division that he constantly tries to create between God and his people. Unlike Jesus, who always seeks to build up relationships and unite people, Satan's goal is to bring about divisions that destroy relationships.
How can we hope to stand up to such a crafty adversary? On our own power, we can't. That's why St. Paul tells us to take up the "whole armor of God" against our enemy. We need to put on the "belt of truth," the "breastplate of righteousness," the "shoes" of the gospel of peace, the "shield of faith," the "helmet of salvation," and the "sword of the Spirit"(Ephesians 6:13-17). We need to know that Jesus has defeated Satan, so that we can have confidence when we find ourselves locked in a struggle.
If we want to see victory, we need to pray. We need to look to the saving power of Jesus' blood and invoke this power over ourselves, our families, and our nation. We need to ask for the intercession of the saints and angels. We need to seek Jesus' strength in the Eucharist and his comfort in the confessional. With all of this spiritual weaponry and with God's own grace, we can fight and win this battle. With the Holy Spirit's help, we can restore broken relationships and bring peace to our world. We can send the devil back where he belongs!

예수님께서 말을 못하는 이에게서 마귀를 쫓아내시는 것을 보고, 또 그 남자가 말을 하기 시작하는 걸 바라보는 군중의 모습을 머리에 그려보세요. 그 정도면 예수님의 신적인 능력을 그들에게 확신시켜 주기에 충분했으리라고 당신은 생각할 겁니다. 하지만 몇몇 사람은 하늘에서 내려오는 표징을 그 즉시 요구했습니다. 예수님이 이미 일으키신 기적은 표징이 아니라는 듯이 말이지요! 또다른 이들은 예수님이 마귀 우두머리의 힘을 빌려 그 마귀를 쫓아냈다고 말하였습니다. 그러면 당신은 여기에서 예수님 말고 누가 활동하고 있다고 생각하십니까?
마귀라고요? 맞았습니다! 마귀는 증오와 불신을 퍼뜨리기 좋아합니다. 마귀는 하느님의 권능을 아무도 믿지 못하게 하려고 우리의 의심을 가지고 장난합니다. 마귀는 악마나 사탄, 거짓말의 대부, 형제의 고발자 등 여러 이름으로 불리지만, 그것들은 모두 마귀가 하느님과 하느님의 백성 사이에 끊임없이 조장하려 하는 분열을 가리킵니다. 언제나 사람 간의 관계 형성과 일치를 추구하신 예수님과 달리, 마귀는 관계를 무너뜨리는 분열을 일으키는 것이 목적입니다.
그렇게 교활한 마귀한테 우리는 어찌 대항하기를 바랄 수 있을까요? 우리 자신의 힘으로는 할 수 없습니다. 그래서 사도 바오로는 적에게 맞설 수 있도록 “하느님의 무기로 완전한 무장”을 갖추어야 한다고 말씀하신 것입니다. 우리는 “진리의 허리띠”, “의로움의 갑옷”, 평화의 복음을 위한 “신”, “믿음의 방패”, “구원의 투구”, “성령의 칼”로 무장해야 합니다.(에페 6,13-17) 우리는 예수님께서 마귀를 물리치셨다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 그래야 우리 자신이 마귀와의 싸움에 걸려들었을 때도 이긴다고 확신할 수 있습니다.
승리하고 싶다면 기도가 필수적입니다. 예수님의 피가 가진 구원의 힘에 의지해서 이 힘이 우리 자신과 우리 가족과 우리나라에도 뻗치도록 간청해야 합니다. 성인들과 천사들의 간구도 청하십시오. 성체성사에서 주시는 예수님의 권능과 고해성사에서 주시는 위로도 찾으십시오. 이 모든 영적 무기들과 하느님께서 주시는 은총에 힘입어 우리는 마귀와 싸워 이길 수 있습니다. 성령의 도우심으로, 무너진 관계를 회복하고 우리가 사는 세상에 평화를 가져올 수 있습니다. 마침내 마귀를 원래 있던 곳으로 되돌려 보낼 수 있습니다!

위해서 당신의 존귀하신 성혈의 힘을 청합니다.
바라건대, 주님 오시어,
저희 모두를 적의 공작에서 인도하고
보호할 수 있게 당신의 천사들을
