There‘s one thing we know about rain and snow: They do their job! If they come down, we are going to get wet. That's just the way nature works. And God is telling us here that his word is the same way. It will do its job, accomplishing God's will no matter how long it takes. That's because God's word is very much like he ispersistent! He is so committed to his plan of salvation that he will spend all night looking for just one missing sheep if he has to (Matthew 18:12-13).
But God's word is not just persistent and powerful; it is also loving. It is so filled with his love that it became flesh and lived among us (John 1:14). This Word from the Father's mouth, Jesus, did not return to his Father until his mission was carried out: that we could be forgiven, freed from the bondage of sin, and adopted as children of God. Although he has been raised up to glory in heaven, Jesus still awaits the final fulfillment of his Father's plan that all of his children live with him in paradise. That is, after all, what God's word is designed to dobring us home.
How does God bring this plan to completion? Through the Holy Spirit, who breathes life into the words of Scripture, making them living and effective. The Spirit speaks to us, bringing God's love and the desires of his heart into our hearts. He nourishes us with his word. He comes to us through prayer, through the sacraments, and through the love of our brothers and sisters. He tries to reach us in every possible way so that we will embrace the words God has spoken and let them conform us into the image of Christ.
Every day, God showers us with his word of life, offering healing to broken families, drug-ravaged neighborhoods, and war-torn streets. He pours out blessings like a sweet, spring rain, bringing peace out of chaos, and hope out of despair. All we have to do is become generous receivers of everything he is so generously giving!

비와 눈에 대해 우리가 잘 아는 게 하나 있습니다. 맡은 바 할 일을 한다는 겁니다! 비나 눈은 내려서 땅에 있는 것들을 적십니다. 그게 바로 자연의 법칙입니다. 하느님께서는 여기서 당신의 말씀도 같은 식으로 작용한다고 말씀하십니다. 하느님의 말씀은, 시간이 아무리 오래 걸리더라도 그분의 뜻을 이룸으로써 그 사명을 반드시 해낼 것입니다. 집요하다는 점에서 하느님의 말씀은 하느님과 매우 닮았기 때문입니다! 주님께서는 당신의 구원계획에 몹시도 충실하시어, 필요하다면 길 잃은 양 단 한 마리를 찾기 위해 온 밤을 지새우십니다.(마태 18,12-13)
그렇다고 하느님의 말씀이 집요하고 강인한 것만은 아닙니다. 한편으론 애정으로 가득 차 있지요. 우리를 참으로 사랑하신 나머지, 말씀이 사람이 되시어 우리 가운데 사셨습니다.(요한 1,14) 아버지의 입에서 나온 말씀이신 예수님께서는 당신의 사명을 완수한 후에야, 즉 우리가 용서받고, 죄의 사슬에서 해방되며, 하느님의 자녀로 입양된 후에야 비로소 아버지께로 돌아가셨습니다. 예수님은 하늘의 영광으로 올림 받으셨지만, 아버지의 계획이 완수되는, 곧 하느님의 모든 자녀가 천국에서 당신과 함께 살게 되는 그날을 아직도 기다리고 계십니다. 우리를 본향으로 데려가는 것이 곧 하느님의 말씀이 지닌 사명인 것입니다.
하느님께서는 이 계획을 어떤 방식으로 완성하실까요? 성경의 말씀에 생명의 입김을 불어넣어 그 말씀들이 살아나 열매를 맺게 해 주시는 성령을 통하여 그렇게 하십니다. 성령께서는 우리에게 말씀하시어 하느님의 사랑과 그분 마음의 열망들을 우리 마음속에 담아 주십니다. 성령께서는 그분의 말씀으로 우리를 양육하시고, 기도와 성사, 형제자매들의 사랑을 통하여 우리에게 오십니다. 성령께서는 우리가 하느님께서 하신 말씀들을 받아들여 그 말씀들이 우리를 그리스도와 같은 모습으로 만들도록 모든 방법을 통해 우리에게 다가오십니다.
하느님께서는 날마다 우리에게 당신 생명의 말씀을 부어 주심으로써, 파탄에 이른 가정, 마약으로 망가진 이웃, 전쟁으로 파괴된 거리에 치유를 베푸십니다. 하느님께서는 혼돈에서 평화가, 절망에서 희망이 움트게 하는 달콤한 봄비 같은 축복을 내리십니다. 우리가 할 일은 다만 그분께서 너그러이 베푸시는 모든 것들을 너그러이 받는 것뿐입니다!
