How do you think Adam and Eve felt after disobeying the Lord‘s Guilty, no doubt, since they realized that they were naked and tried to cover themselves with fig leaves. But it must have been something more than guilt that was bothering them. Not only did they try to hide their mistake; they tried to hide altogether. They didn’t want God to see them at all. So along with guilt, they experienced the related, yet even stronger, feeling of shame.
Shame can do the same thing to us that it did to Adam and Eve. It‘s the feeling that tells us, "You're no good! You're hopeless!" In a sense, shame is really guilt that's out of control, because it gets at who we are, not just what we've done. Instead of motivating us to fix our problems, shame makes us believe we are the problem, and that we'll just never be good enough. As such, shame is the devil's ultimate weapon. In his quest to drive us away from Jesus, Satan always tries to convince us that we have no hope of receiving God's mercy.
What a contrast to the way God sees us! He's the very perfection of love, and he wants to shower us with that love. He brought his Son into the world so that we could be free from our sins and never again feel that we had to hide from his gaze. When Jesus died and the veil of the Temple was torn in two, we were invited back to the Garden. We were offered another chance at eternal life, which is nothing less than knowing God, and his only Son Jesus Christ (John 17:3).
Every day, God calls us to draw closer to him. So try your best today to give to him just one area that you have not yet opened up to him for healing or one thing you've avoided talking to him about out of fear or guilt. Let go of these barriers that keep you from walking in true freedom. God is asking, "Where are you?" Answer him in trust, knowing that he will finish the good work he has begun in you!

"Father, show me those things
that are holding me back from you.
Give me the grace to release them to you,
and to trust your love and your wisdom."

아담과 하와는 주님의 명을 거역한 뒤에 어떤 느낌이었을까요? 틀림없이 죄책감을 느꼈겠지요. 자신들이 알몸인 것을 깨닫고 무화과나무 잎으로 몸을 가렸으니까요. 그러나 그들을 괴롭힌 것은 죄책감 이상의 무엇이었을 것입니다. 그들은 자신들의 잘못을 숨기려고 했을 뿐 아니라 하느님에게서 완전히 숨어버리려고 했으니까요. 절대로 찾아내지 못하시도록 말입니다. 그렇게 그들은 죄책감과 더불어, 그와 연관이 있으면서도 그보다 더 강렬한 수치심을 체험했던 것입니다.
수치심으로 인하여, 아담과 하와에게 일어난 일이 우리에게도 일어날 수 있습니다. 그것은 우리에게 “넌 틀려먹었어! 넌 희망이 없어!”라고 말하는 그런 느낌입니다. 어떤 의미에서 수치심은 통제할 수 없는 죄책감입니다. 수치심은 우리가 저지른 일뿐 아니라 우리 존재의 흠을 들춰내기 때문입니다. 그것은 문제를 해결하도록 우리를 자극하는 대신, 우리 자신이 바로 문제이며 우린 절대로 인격자가 될 수 없다고 믿게 합니다. 이렇듯이 수치심은 악마의 마지막 무기입니다. 우리를 예수님께로부터 멀어지게 하려는 사탄은 우리가 하느님의 자비를 받을 가망이 없음을 우리에게 납득시키려고 늘 안간힘을 씁니다.
하느님께서 우리를 보시는 방법과 얼마나 대조적입니까! 그분께서는 사랑의 완성 그 자체이시며 그 사랑을 우리에게 쏟아주고 싶어하십니다. 그분께서는 우리가 죄에서 해방되어 다시는 당신의 눈을 피하지 않아도 되도록 아드님을 세상에 보내주셨지요. 예수님께서 숨을 거두시고 성전의 휘장이 둘로 찢어졌을 때 우리는 낙원으로 되돌아가도록 초대받았습니다. 우리에게 또 한 번 영원한 생명의 기회가 주어진 거지요. 영원한 생명이란 홀로 참 하느님이신 아버지를 알고 그분의 외아들 예수 그리스도를 아는 것입니다.(요한 17,3)
하느님께서는 당신 가까이 다가오라고 날마다 우리를 부르십니다. 그러니 오늘, 아직 주님께 치유를 청하지 않은 점이나 두려움과 죄책감에서 숨기고 있는 것 중 한 가지라도 주님께 드리도록 노력하세요. 진정한 자유의 여정을 가로막는 모든 장애물을 떠나보내세요. 하느님께서 당신에게 묻고 계십니다. “너 어디에 있느냐?” 주님께서 당신 안에서 시작하신 선업을 완성하실 것을 확신하면서 신뢰하는 마음으로 응답하세요!

“아버지, 당신에게서 멀어지게 하는 것들을
제게 보여 주십시오.
그것들을 당신께 드리고
당신 사랑과 지혜에 의지하도록
제게 은총을 주십시오.”
