"Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness."(Genesis 1:26)
What an amazing gift we have been given! We are the only part of God's creation with a free will and a soul that lives on forever. We are also the only part of creation that can be transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ through the choices we make. Imagine all the opportunities that are ours because of the way God made us! Imagine, also, the awesome calling that our dignity entails!
Because we know the truth about our humanity, it's our job to uphold it. Unfortunately, that task is particularly challenging today. So much of the world is caught up in what Pope John Paul II called a culture of death that devalues human life. The unborn are subjected to unspeakable violence. The poor and weak are considered expendable. Family life is degraded by callousness, selfishness, and division. It can seem so dark at times that we may begin to think that the battle has already been lost. But all appearances to the contrary, we are the winners!
We should never give up on our efforts to defend the sanctity of life, because God stands behind usand he will ultimately have the victory. His word, the gospel of life, will not return void but will achieve the purpose for which he sent it (Isaiah 55:11). There will truly be "a new heaven and a new earth"(Revelation 21:1), and the lies of Satan will ultimately be exposed. The light of Christ will overcome the darkness (John 1:5), but not without our help!
Our part in bringing about this victory is to let our own light or rather, the light of Christ in each one of us shine. Through our words and our actions, we can show the world that human beings are, indeed, children of God, and are always to be treated with the greatest respect and dignity. Through the way we treat the weak and vulnerable, we will witness Christ to the world. Through the way we treat everyone with respect even those whom we may dislike or disagree with we can change hearts. And only when hearts are changed will societies change.

“우리와 비슷하게 우리 모습으로 사람을 만들자.”(창세 1,26)
우리는 얼마나 멋진 선물을 받았습니까! 하느님의 창조물 중에서 우리 인간만이 자유의지와 불멸하는 영혼을 가지고 있으니까요. 우리는 또한 예수 그리스도와 닮은 모습이 되고자 선택한다면 그렇게 될 수 있는 유일한 창조물입니다. 하느님께서 우리를 이렇게 만들어 주심으로써 우리가 누리게 된 온갖 기회를 머릿속에 그려 보세요! 또한 하느님의 놀라운 부르심으로써 우리가 존엄하게 됨을 한번 생각해 보세요!
우리 인간성의 참다운 본질을 알고 있기에, 이를 지키고 보존하는 일은 우리의 몫입니다. 그러나 유감스럽게도 그 사명이 오늘날 큰 도전을 받고 있습니다. 교황 요한 바오로 2세가 ‘죽음의 문화’라고 부른, 곧 인간 생명을 말살시키는 문화에 세상이 온통 발목이 잡혀 있습니다. 태아들이 차마 입에 담을 수 없는 폭력을 당하고 있습니다. 가난하고 힘없는 이들이 무가치한 소모품으로 여겨지고 있습니다. 가정이 무관심과 이기주의 그리고 분열로 인해 붕괴되고 있습니다. 너무 암흑 같은 상황이라 싸움에서 이미 졌다는 생각이 들지도 모릅니다. 하지만 겉으로 보이는 것과 달리 우리는 승자입니다!
우리는 생명의 존엄성을 지키려는 노력을 절대로 포기하지 말아야 합니다. 하느님께서 우리 편에 서 계시고, 마침내 그분께서 승리하실 테니까요. 그분의 말씀인 생명의 복음은 결코 헛되이 돌아오지 않고 그분이 내리신 사명을 완수하고 돌아올 것입니다.(이사 55,11) 그곳에 진정 “새 하늘과 새 땅”(묵시 21,1)이 펼쳐지고, 사탄의 속임수는 결국 드러나고 말 것입니다. 그리스도의 빛이 어둠을 이길 것입니다.(요한 1,5) 하지만 우리의 협력 없이는 아무것도 이루어지지 않습니다!
이 승리를 이루는 일에서 우리의 몫은 우리의 빛이, 아니 우리 한 사람 한 사람 안에 있는 그리스도의 빛이 빛나도록 하는 것입니다. 우리의 말과 행동으로써 모든 사람이 하느님의 자녀임을, 그리고 그들은 항상 극진한 존중과 대우를 받아야 함을 세상에 보여 주어야 합니다. 우리는 약하고 상처받기 쉬운 형제들을 대하는 우리의 태도를 통해 그리스도를 세상에 증언합니다. 우리가 모든 이들을, 심지어 싫어하거나 뜻이 맞지 않는 사람들까지도 존중하는 마음으로 대할 때, 우리는 사람들의 마음을 바꿀 수 있습니다. 그리고 사람들의 마음이 변할 때 비로소 사회가 변하게 될 것입니다.
“아버지, 오늘 생명이 위협받고 있는 이들을
지켜 주십시오. 주님,
우리 모두의 힘을 북돋우시어
개개의 인간 생명이 지닌 숭고한 존엄성을
수호하게 하여 주십시오.” |
