Sometimes we think that Jesus came to earth carrying a big eraser, and that when he redeemed us, he simply wiped out all the regulations of the Old Testament. But just because he railed at some of the Pharisees, we shouldn't think he had the same attitude toward the law that they upheld so rigidly. In fact, Jesus tells us that not only did he come to uphold the law but that the least transgression against it can make us "least" in his kingdom!
It's import!ant to know that Jesus didn't say these words to condemn us but to save us. After all, he came to bring us abundant life, but he knows that in order to experience that life to the full, we need to follow his commandments. Like a parent who is trying to keep us out of trouble, he warned us to be vigilant against sin, because he knows that giving in to temptation will make us anything but happy. He knows that falling into sin leaves us with less freedom, not more.
How fortunate we are that Jesus is with us in our struggles! He doesn't just issue warnings from afar; he helps us to root out sin wherever it shows up. By examining our conscience daily, we can ensure that sin does not gain a foothold in our hearts. As we look back at our day, we can ask the Holy Spirit to show us how we may have strayed from God's truth. Then, bringing our failings into the light of God's love, we can experience his mercy, and we can get a clearer sense of how we can take steps to do better next time.
It has been said that if we want to move mountains, we have to start by carrying away small stones, and that's certainly true with sin. If we keep fighting the daily battles against little temptations, asking for God's help every time we're tested, we will soon start to make great progress. If we give every area of our lives over to him even those hidden dark cornershe will give us overwhelming grace and favor to live victoriously, and even to become "greatest in the kingdom of heaven!"

가끔 우리는 이런 생각을 하지요. 예수님께서는 커다란 지우개를 가지고 이 세상에 오셨고, 우리를 구원하셨을 때 구약의 모든 규정들을 깨끗이 지워버리신 것이라고요. 하지만 예수님께서 일부 바리사이들을 비난했다고 해서 그들이 엄격하게 지켜온 율법에 대해서도 그와 같은 태도를 지니셨다고 생각해서는 안 됩니다. 실은, 예수님께서는 율법을 준수하러 이 세상에 오셨을 뿐 아니라 율법의 한 획이라도 어기는 자는 당신 나라에서 “가장 작은 자”라 불릴 것이라고 말씀하십니다!
중요한 것은 예수님께서 우리를 비난하려는 뜻이 아니라 구원하시려는 뜻에서 이 말씀을 하셨음을 알아듣는 것입니다. 예수님께서는 우리에게 넘치는 생명을 가져다주려고 오셨지만, 우리가 그 생명을 충만히 경험하려면 당신의 계명을 지켜야 한다는 것을 잘 알고 계십니다. 우리를 위험에서 지키려 애쓰는 부모님처럼 예수님께서는 우리에게 죄에 대한 경각심을 일깨우십니다. 유혹에 굴복하면 우리가 절대 행복해질 수 없다는 것을 아시기 때문입니다. 또한 죄에 떨어지면 우리의 자유를 빼앗긴다는 것도 알고 계십니다.
우리가 죄에 맞서 싸울 때 예수님께서 함께하시니 얼마나 다행입니까! 그분께서는 멀리에서 그저 경고만 보내시는 것이 아니라 죄가 고개를 들 적마다 당장 그 자리에서 뿌리 뽑도록 도와주십니다. 우리는 날마다 양심성찰을 함으로써 죄가 우리 마음속에 자리 잡지 못하도록 단단히 지킬 수 있습니다. 하루를 되돌아보면서 우리가 어떻게 하느님의 진리에서 벗어나게 되었는지 보여 주십사 성령께 청할 수 있습니다. 그런 다음 우리의 잘못들을 하느님 사랑의 빛으로 비추어 보면, 그분의 자비를 맛볼 수 있을 뿐더러 다음번에는 더 잘하려면 어떤 조치를 취해야 할지 더욱 분명히 알게 될 것입니다.
산을 움직이려면 우선 작은 돌부터 날라야 한다는 말이 있지요. 이 말은 죄의 경우에도 딱 들어맞습니다. 시험에 들 적마다 하느님의 도우심을 청하면서 일상의 사소한 유혹들과 맞서 싸운다면, 우리는 머지않아 상당한 진전을 이루게 될 것입니다. 그분께 우리 삶의 구석구석을, 꼭꼭 숨겨진 어두운 구석까지도 전적으로 내어드린다면, 주님께서는 엄청난 은총과 은혜를 우리에게 베푸시어 우리가 승리의 삶을 살고 마침내는 “하늘 나라에서 가장 큰 사람”이 되게 하실 것입니다!
