If you're looking for an example of a righteous man, you won't do much better than Tobit. A leader in the Jewish community exiled to Nineveh, he was generous and compassionate, even seeing to it that his dead countrymen receive a decent burial. Even though he had already been penalized once before for this offense, he interrupted his meal to go out and bury still another body!
Yet despite such piety in the public arena, it seems that Tobit didn't always keep his cool at home. A problem arose when Tobit became blind, and his wife, Anna, had to go out to support the family by working as a seamstress. When her clients gave her a goat as a bonus, Tobit refused to let the animal into the house. "Perhaps it was stolen!" he cried. Anna quickly retorted, "Where are your charitable deeds now?… Your true character is finally showing itself!" (Tobit 2:13-14). While Tobit was certainly trying his best to keep the law, he might have exercised a little more patience here.
As this story shows, virtue is often much easier to practice in public than with those who know us best. When we have the opportunity, we may gladly make a grand gesture: taking a stand against poverty or oppression, making a contribution to charity, or giving up our free time to respond to someone in need. However, even though we are models of generosity, tolerance, and patience in the marketplace, we may fly off the handle at our loved one's trivial offense.
But the Holy Spirit makes no distinctions between "public" and "private": Both arenas are import!ant to him. He knows how hard we try and how often we fail, and he's ready to help us. So rather than becoming dis-couraged, we should beg Jesus for the eyes to see him in the familiar form of those we live with every day. And let's remember that our true character is not self-centered and sinful. In baptism we were made anew in the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and his love is alive in us (Galatians 2:20). That love longs to express itself for all to see including those closest to us.
"Father, you know how hard
it is to love someone day in and day out.
Please fill me with your Spirit,
so that I can love those I know best
with your compassionate heart."
