Paul's speech to the Athenians is a graphic illustration of his strategy to become "all things to all people" in his preaching of the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:22). Paul knew that the Athenians were a religious people who also had a love of astronomy, poetry, and the arts. So he wove all of these elements into his speech that day, giving his own very lofty and poetic presentation of the gospel.
Paul's strategy is just as effective today as it was when he developed it. It is vital that we try to be shrewd and creative in our approach to sharing the good news with other people.
Take a moment now and think of two or three people you would like to see know Jesus better. Perhaps one of your children comes to mind, and he or she is interested in sports. You may be able to engage your child in a conversation about the import!ance of daily training, proper nutrition, and taking care of his or her body in order to be a world-class competitor. That opens you up to showing how we also need to practice spiritual training by praying a few minutes each day, and how we need good spiritual nutrition from a regular time of reading the Bible each day. Surely this approach will be received more favorably than a set of directives to do some religious things that seem to have no correlation to your child's daily life.
You may be surprised at how good you can become at this. You may find yourself telling a neighbor who loves gardening about the need to pluck weeds of bitterness and resentment out of our hearts. After attending a play with another couple, you may find yourself drawing elements from the play's story line and using them to describe the struggle of good versus evil. Whatever you can think of, use it. And remember, Jesus will bless even your smallest attempts to share his life and love.

"Jesus, give me a spirit of creativity
in sharing the gospel.
Show me how I can use the everyday events
of life to make you known.
Help me to meet people where they are,
so that all may come to know you more."

바오로 사도가 아테네 시민들에게 한 이 설교는, 복음을 전파함에 있어 “모든 이에게 모든 것”이 되고자 하는 그의 전략을 생생하게 묘사하고 있습니다.(1코린 9,22) 바오로 사도는 아테네 시민들이 종교심이 깊은 데다가 천문학과 시, 예술의 애호가라는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 이날 한 자신의 설교에 이 모든 요소들을 짜 넣어 고상하며 시적으로 복음을 설명하였지요.
바오로 사도의 이런 전략은 그가 처음 그것을 생각해 냈을 때와 마찬가지로 오늘날에도 효과가 있습니다. 우리가 다른 이들과 복음의 기쁜 소식을 나누고자 할 때에 중요한 것은 민첩하면서도 창조적으로 대응하는 것입니다. 
지금 잠시 짬을 내어 예수님을 더 잘 알게 하고픈 두세 사람을 떠올려 보세요. 만일 당신의 아들이나 딸이 생각났는데 그 아이가 운동을 좋아한다고 칩시다. 그렇다면, 세계적인 선수가 되기 위해서는 날마다 훈련하고 충분한 영양을 섭취하고 자신의 몸을 돌보는 것이 얼마나 중요한가 하는 이야기로 아이를 대화에 끌어들일 수 있을 것입니다. 그러다가 자연스럽게, 매일같이 몇 분간의 기도로 정신을 단련하는 것이 얼마나 필요한지, 또한 날마다 규칙적으로 성경을 읽으며 영적 자양분을 섭취하는 것이 얼마나 필요한지 알려줄 수 있을 것입니다. 이런 방식으로 접근을 하면, 아이의 일상생활과 아무 관련이 없어 보이는 종교 생활을 하라고 이것저것 지시하는 것보다 훨씬 호의적으로 받아들여질 게 분명합니다.
하다보면 당신이 이 일을 얼마나 잘 해낼 수 있는지 깨닫고선 놀라게 될 거예요. 자신도 모르는 사이, 정원 가꾸기가 취미인 이웃에게 우리의 마음에서 번뇌와 원한의 잡초를 뽑아내는 일이 얼마나 필요한지 이야기하기도 하고, 친구 부부와 연극을 본 후에 그 연극의 줄거리에서 따 온 내용들로 선과 악의 대결을 설명하기도 할 겁니다. 생각할 수 있는 건 무엇이든 활용해 보세요. 그리고 기억하세요, 당신이 예수님의 생명과 사랑을 나누고자 하면 그 시도가 아무리 보잘것없더라도 예수님께서는 축복해 주신다는 것을요.

“예수님, 복음을 나누는 일에
독창성을 발휘할 수 있게 해 주세요.
일상에서 일어나는 일들을 어떻게 활용하여
당신을 알릴 수 있을지 알려 주시고,
사람들이 있는 곳으로 가서 그들을 만나
모든 이들이 당신을 좀더 알 수 있게 도와주세요.”
