Jesus told his beloved apostles that they were not simply his servants but his very own friends. They were the ones he had invited to be with him. They were the ones he trusted enough to send out to preach the good news in his name. Matthias, whose feast we celebrate today, was yet another one of these "friends" who had been with Jesus from the beginning and had seen him alive after Easter Sunday (Acts 1:21-22).
Isn't it amazing that we too are called into intimate friendship with Jesus? Like his first followers, we too are invited to live with him and become a witness to his resurrection. It may sound too idealistic to be true, but that's only because we are looking at the end product, not the process. Like any human relationship, friendship with Jesus grows over time. As we spend time with the Lord in prayer, we will gradually become more and more like him andwe will gradually become more effective heralds of his kingdom.
No less than the apostles, every believer is called to bear witness to the joy of knowing Jesus. God wants to see lay people as well as priests and religious participating in the apostolic mission of the church. The Fathers of Vatican II taught: "Through their baptism and confirm!ation all are commissioned by the Lord Himself.… Thus every layman, in virtue of the very gifts bestowed upon him, is at the same time a witness and a living instrument of the mission of the church"(Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, 33).
How will people experience the mercy of Christ unless we become his hands and feet? In the ordinary and extraordinary things we do inour churches, our neighborhoods, and even our homes Jesus asks us to make his love present to others. He wants to shine through each of us so that other people will be drawn to him. So on this day when we remember yet another "friend" of Jesus's ask the Lord to draw you into closer friendship with him so you can become a more effective instrument of his gospel.
"Thank you, Jesus,
for making me one of your friends.
Help me take hold of
the share of your work
that you are entrusting to me."

예수님께서는 사랑하는 제자들을 그저 당신의 종이라 부르지 않으시고 바로 당신의 친구라고 부르셨습니다. 그들은 주님께서 함께 하자고 초대한 사람들이며, 주님의 이름으로 복음을 전파하라고 보내실 만큼 주님께서 믿으신 사람들이었습니다. 오늘 우리가 축일을 기념하고 있는 마티아 성인 또한 예수님과 처음부터 함께 했던 이 ‘친구’ 중의 한 사람으로, 예수님께서 부활하신 후 살아 계신 것을 목격하기도 했습니다.(사도 1,21-22)
우리도 역시 예수님의 친밀한 친구로 부름 받았다는 것이 놀랍지 않나요? 그분의 첫번째 제자들처럼 우리도 주님과 함께 살고 주님 부활의 증인이 되라고 초대받았습니다. 이 말은 너무 이상적이라 진실이 아닌 것처럼 들릴지 모르지만, 그것은 우리가 과정은 보지 않고 결과물만 보기 때문입니다. 인간관계가 다 그렇듯이 예수님과 맺은 우정도 시간이 지나면서 자라납니다. 기도하면서 주님과 함께 시간을 보내는 동안, 우리는 점점 더 그분을 닮아갈 것이며, 점점 더 효과적으로 하느님 나라를 전하는 전령이 되어갈 것입니다.
모든 신자들은 사도들 못지않게 예수님을 앎으로써 느끼는 기쁨을 증언하라고 부름 받았습니다. 하느님께서는 성직자 수도자뿐만 아니라 평신도도 교회의 사도직에 참여하기를 바라십니다. 제2차 바티칸 공의회의 교부들은 이렇게 가르쳤습니다. “모든 이는 세례와 견진을 통하여 바로 주님께 그 사도직에 임명된다. … 이렇게 모든 평신도는 자기에게 주어진 그 은혜로써 바로 교회의 사명을 수행하는 살아 있는 도구이며 증인이다.”(교회 헌장 33항)
우리가 그리스도의 손과 발이 되지 않는다면 어떻게 사람들이 그분의 자비를 경험하겠습니까? 예수님께서는 우리가 일상적인 일을 할 때나 특별한 일을 할 때나, 교회나 동네나 집에서까지도, 당신의 사랑을 다른 이들에게 보여 주라고 하십니다. 주님께서는 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 통하여 빛을 발하심으로써 다른 이들이 주님께로 가까이 다가오기를 바라십니다. 그러니 예수님의 또 다른 ‘친구’를 기념하는 오늘, 당신이 주님의 복음을 전하는 더 나은 도구가 될 수 있도록 그분의 더 가까운 친구로 끌어 주십사 주님께 청하십시오.
