I am the Lord.… I am the Lord.… I am the Lord.… I am the Lord.
Do you get the sense that God is trying to tell us something here? After each series of commands concerning how the Israelites are to treat one another, he proclaims yet again: "I am the Lord."(Leviticus 19:12,14,16,18). Does this mean that he is some egotistical deity who wants to drill his superiority into our brains? Not at all! He is telling us that each command he gives is yet another reflection of his holinessa holiness he is inviting us to take as our own. He is telling us that if we want to know who God really is, all we have to do is look at these commands.
By placing such an emphasis on brotherly love and respect and honor, God is showing us that he himself is a Father who treats all his children the same way. We are to show honor because that is what he does, and he is "the Lord." Not surprisingly, his creation works best when it is in harmony with his nature. As his children, we cannot expect to find true happiness except in treating one another the same way he treats us.
And yet we still fail. In the thick of the struggle, we lose sight of God's kindness to us and we disobey him by showing unkindness to those around us. But, true to himself, God does not seek revenge or hold a grudge. He does for us exactly what he commands the Israelites to do for each other. He forgives us. He extends his life and love to us. He still offers us the joy of heaven on earth, if we will only accept him into our hearts.
Amazing, isn't it? He is Almighty God, but he doesn't lord it over us. He is the Uncreated Creator, but he stoops down to share his very life with us. If this is the way our God treats us, how much more should we act with justice and mercy toward one another!

여기에서 당신은 하느님께서 우리에게 무언가를 말씀하려 하신다는 것이 느껴집니까? 하느님께서는 이스라엘 백성에게 서로를 어떻게 대해야 하는지에 대한 계명을 주시면서, 계명 말미마다 “나는 주님이다.”(레위 19,12.14.16.18)라고 선언하십니다. 하느님이 당신의 우월성을 인간의 뇌리에 깊이 새겨 넣고 싶어하는 이기적인 신이라서 그런 건가요? 천만의 말씀입니다! 그분께서는 각 계명이 당신의 거룩함을 반영하고 있다는 것을 우리에게 말씀하시면서, 그 거룩함을 우리 자신의 것으로 만들라고 권유하고 계십니다. 하느님이 진정 어떤 분인지는 이 계명들만 봐도 알 수 있다고 말씀하고 계십니다.
하느님께서는 우리에게 형제적 사랑과 존중, 그리고 신의를 이렇듯 강조하심으로써 당신 자신이 모든 자녀를 그와 같이 대하는 아버지이심을 보여 주십니다. 우리가 형제들과의 신의를 지켜야 하는 건 그분께서 신의를 지키시는 분이시며 우리의 ‘주님’이시기 때문입니다. 주님이 창조하신 세상이 그분의 본성과 조화를 이룰 때 최선의 결과를 빚는 건 당연한 일이지요. 우리는 그분의 자녀로서, 그분께서 우리를 대하시는 것처럼 서로 대하지 않고서는 참된 행복을 기대할 수 없습니다.
하지만 우리는 여전히 그러질 못합니다. 갈등이 고조되면, 우리는 하느님이 우리에게 얼마나 다정하셨는지를 잊고 주위 사람들을 마구 대함으로써 하느님의 계명을 어깁니다. 그러나 정말이지 하느님께서는 우리에게 복수를 하거나 원망을 하지 않으십니다. 그분께서는 이스라엘 백성들더러 서로서로 해 주라고 명하신 것을 우리에게 해 주시고, 우리를 용서하시며, 우리에게 당신의 생명과 사랑을 주십니다. 우리가 주님을 마음속에 영접하기만 하면, 계속해서 우리에게 이 땅에서 천상의 기쁨을 누리게 해 주실 것입니다.
놀랍지 않나요? 그분은 전능하신 하느님이시지만 우리 위에 군림하지 않으시고, 창조되지 않은 창조주이시지만 당신 생명을 우리와 나누시려 몸을 굽히십니다. 하느님께서 우리를 그렇게 대하신다면, 우리는 얼마나 큰 공정과 자애로 서로를 대해야 할까요?

당신의 진리와 사랑에 저를 맡깁니다.
주님의 영을 부어 주시어 제 안에 바꾸어야
할 것이 무엇인지 보게 해 주십시오.
저를 거룩하게 하시고,
