As Catholics, we are taught that our churches are holy ground. That's because the Blessed Sacrament, the body of Christ, is placed inside the tabernacle on our altars. It's for this reason that we genuflect before sitting down or leaving our seats. It's an outward sign that we acknowledge Jesus as our King, that we worship and adore him, and that we are willing to receive him into our hearts and submit to his will.
But what about when we leave the church? Jesus is present out there in all the people we meet as well. Everyone, not just those we are close to and comfortable with, is made in the image and likeness of God, and when we see them, we're really seeing a reflection of his glory. So how do you treat them? Do you show them the honor and respect they deserve? As Jesus tells us, whenever we receive even a little child in his name, we are receiving him.
If we can really grasp this truth, we can understand how it is possible to become "the servant of all" (Mark 9:35). It's not a matter of just "doing", it has to start on the inside. When we start to worship God for his greatness and majesty, we begin to see that majesty in his creation as well, and to love this world as he loves it. When we let the Holy Spirit dwell in us, we come to see others's needs as God sees them, and we want to reach out to them with his compassion.
Tomorrow begins the season of Lent. Let's ask the Lord to help us appreciate the people in our lives. Let's ask that we would see him more clearly in those we love, and in those we find it hard to love: those who are argumentative and hostile, those who are cold and indifferent, or those who are demanding. This is one way we can deny ourselves: by finding the goodness we can find in such "difficult" people. Who knows? Instead of dreading them, we may end up loving them ­ and they, in turn, will draw us closer to Jesus!

가톨릭 신자인 우리는 성당은 거룩한 장소라고 배웁니다. 감실 안에 그리스도의 몸인 성체가 모셔져 있기 때문이지요. 우리가 자리에 앉기 전이나 자리를 떠날 때 공손히 무릎 꿇는 것은 이 때문입니다. 그건 예수님께서 우리의 왕이심을 인정하고, 우리가 그분을 경배하고 흠숭하며, 그분을 기꺼이 우리 마음에 모시고 그분의 뜻에 순종한다는 외적인 표시입니다.
그렇다면 성당 밖에서는 어떻습니까? 예수님께서는 우리가 성당 밖에서 만나는 모든 사람 안에도 현존해 계십니다. 우리와 허물없이 지내는 가까운 사람들뿐 아니라 모든 사람이 하느님을 닮은 모습으로 창조되었기에, 우리는 실제로 그들 안에서 하느님 영광이 투영되는 것을 봅니다. 그렇다면 그 사람들을 어떻게 대해야 하겠습니까? 우리는 그들에게 합당한 경의와 존중을 표합니까? 예수님께서 말씀하셨듯이, 어린이 하나를 그분의 이름으로 받아들이면 그분을 받아들이는 것입니다.
우리가 이 진리를 정말로 터득할 수 있다면 “모든 이의 종이 된다.”(마르 9,35)는 것이 어떻게 가능한지도 이해할 수 있습니다. 그것은 그저 ‘행동’하는 문제가 아니라 마음 깊은 곳에서부터 우러나와야 하는 것입니다. 우리가 위대하시고 엄위하신 하느님께 예배를 드릴 때, 그분의 창조물 안에서도 그 엄위하심을 보고, 그분이 이 세상을 사랑하시듯이 우리도 이 세상을 사랑하게 될 것입니다. 성령께서 우리 안에 머물도록 해 드릴 때, 우리는 하느님께서 보시듯 우리 이웃들에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지 보게 될 것이고, 하느님의 연민으로 그 사람들에게 다가가고자 할 것입니다.
내일부터 사순 시기가 시작됩니다. 우리의 삶에서 만나는 모든 사람을 고맙게 여기는 마음을 주십사고 주님께 청합시다. 우리가 사랑하는 사람들뿐 아니라 사랑하기 어려운 사람들, 즉 다투기를 좋아하며 적대적인 사람들, 냉정하고 무관심한 사람들, 그리고 성질이 까다로운 사람들 안에서도 주님의 모습을 더욱 밝히 볼 수 있게 도와주십사 간청합시다. 이것도 우리 자신을 버릴 수 있는 한 방법입니다. 그런 ‘대하기 어려운’ 사람들 안에서 찾을 수 있는 미덕을 발견함으로써 말입니다. 그들을 두려워하는 마음이 사라지고 사랑하게 될지, 또한 그들이 우리를 예수님께 더 가까이 데려다 줄지 누가 알겠습니까!

“주님, 이 사순 시기가 주님께서 제 곁에
보내 주신 사람들의 풍요한 자산을 알아보는
시간이 되게 해 주십시오.
그들이 저에게 축복임을 깨닫도록 도와주시고,
저도 그들을 축복하도록 제게 당신의 성령을
부어 주십시오!”
