When Jesus encouraged his listeners to build their lives on the "solid foundation" of his word, he was doing more than using compelling symbolism. He meant it! Consider this story, sent in by a reader of The Word Among Us:
"My wife has a difficult time with pregnancies and had suffered numerous miscarriages. By God's grace, however, we did manage to have two healthy children. When she again became pregnant about two years after our second child was born, we both felt God's assurance that he would protect this child and bring it to birth safely. However, at twelve weeks, just as it had happened with other pregnancies, my wife began to miscarry. I rushed her to the hospital, but the nurse couldn't find a heart beat. The doctor told us that she wanted to do one final test, but that it didn't look promising."
"A we waited, we remembered the peace and assurance we had in prayer a few weeks earlier. We decided to pray and ask God to help us believe in his goodness and his promises. When the doctor came back and performed a sonogram, we not only heard a heart beat, we saw the baby moving around as any normal, healthy child would. Amazed, we thanked God. The doctor warned us, however, that the condition still could be dangerous, and that my wife might have to face the final three months of her pregnancy confined to bed."
"As we awaited her six-month appointment, we often felt fearful. But whenever we prayed, we would remember God's promises and, again and again, we tried our best to trust him. And every time, Jesus was there to comfort us and strengthen our faith.
Just before our six-month appointment, we attended a healing service at our church. The man leading the service said that he believed God wanted to tell a pregnant woman in the church (there were three) not to be afraid. God loved her and the child and was prepared to move mountains to protect them. When we went to the doctor's office that week, the doctor announced that there were no problems at all. Three months later, our daughter was born, and today she is a strong, healthy three-year-old."

"Lord Jesus, you are
the rock of our lives.
Teach me to trust in you and
to build my life on solid foundation
of your word."

예수님께서 청중들에게 자신의 삶을 주님 말씀의 “반석” 위에 세우라고 촉구하셨을 때 그분은 그저 강력한 상징을 사용하고자 하신 게 아니었습니다. 주님께서는 바로 그 말씀 그대로를 의미하셨습니다! 「워드어몽어스」(「말씀지기」의 원전)의 독자가 보낸 이 이야기를 한 번 생각해 봅시다.
“제 아내는 임신으로 힘든 시기를 겪었고, 유산도 여러 번 경험했습니다. 그러나 하느님의 은총으로 건강한 아기를 둘이나 낳아 기르게 되었지요. 그런데 둘째 아이를 낳은 지 2년 만에 아내가 다시 임신하게 되었을 때, 우리는 둘 다 주님께서 이 아이를 보호하여 무사히 태어나게 해 주시겠다고 확신시켜 주심을 느꼈습니다. 그러나 12주가 되자 다른 임신 때와 마찬가지로 아내는 유산기가 있었습니다. 저는 서둘러서 아내를 병원으로 데려 갔는데, 간호사는 아기의 심장 박동이 잡히지 않는다고 했습니다. 의사는 마지막으로 한 번 더 검사를 해 보겠지만, 별로 희망이 없어 보인다고 했지요.”
“검사를 기다리던 중에 우리는 몇 주 전에 우리가 기도하면서 느꼈던 평화와 확신이 생각났습니다. 그래서 하느님께 기도를 드리기로 하고 주님의 선하심과 약속을 믿게 도와달라고 빌었습니다. 의사가 다시 와서 소노그램 검사를 했을 때, 우리는 아기의 심장 박동을 들을 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라, 아기가 건강한 정상아들과 다를 바 없이 움직이는 것을 보았습니다. 우리는 놀라움에 하느님께 감사드렸습니다. 그러나 의사는 상태가 아직 위험해질 수 있으니 주의하라고 하며, 제 아내가 임신 말기 3개월 동안 침대에 꼼짝 않고 누워 있어야 할지도 모른다고 경고했습니다.”
“임신 6개월째에 받는 검진 예약을 기다리면서 우리는 때때로 두려움을 느꼈습니다. 하지만 기도할 때마다, 하느님께서 해 주신 약속을 자꾸만 되새기면서 주님을 향한 믿음을 잃지 않으려고 발버둥 쳤습니다. 그리고 그때마다 예수님께서는 우리 곁에서 위로를 주시고 믿음을 굳세게 해 주셨습니다.”
“6개월째 검진이 있기 바로 전에 우리는 본당에서 열린 한 치유 예식에 참석하였습니다. 그런데 예식을 이끌던 분이 말하기를, 지금 분명히 하느님께서 성당 안에 있는 아기를 가진 한 여자에게 걱정하지 말라고 말씀하시고 싶어하신다는 것이었어요.(거기에는 임산부가 세 명 있었지요.) 하느님께서는 그녀와 아기를 사랑하시어 그들을 지키기 위해서라면 산이라도 옮길 준비가 되어 있다고요. 그 주에 우리가 병원에 갔을 때, 의사는 모든 것이 다 순조롭다고 말하더군요. 석 달 뒤에 우리 딸이 태어났고, 지금은 튼튼하고 건강한 세 살배기 아이가 되었답니다.”

“주 예수님, 주님께서는
저희 삶의 반석이십니다.
주님을 믿고 주님 말씀의 반석 위에
저의 삶을 세우는 법을 가르쳐 주십시오.”
