"Whoever keeps my word will never see death."(John 8:51)
Because Jesus has overcome death once and for all, his word is always life-giving. It enlivens us now, and it remains in us like a magnet pulling us toward eternal life. We can use this word to welcome and share life-giving words, as well as to ignore and reject words that carry death.
So many of the words we encounter, whisper to ourselves, or say to others every day are death-dealing words: "You can have it all. That purchase will make you happy." "You idiot! You always mess up." "What did I expect? No one cares about me."
Jesus promised that those who keep his word will never see death. What words do you keep in your heart and on your lips? Do you believe that these words really do have the power to bring spiritual life or death? Perhaps today would be a good time to examine which kind of words we entertain, which kind we speak, and how these words affect the people around us.
Our memories, too, can be vehicles of death or life. When we focus our attention on past failures ­ whether our own or someone else's ­ the past becomes a dead weight that prevents us from moving forward into God's plan for today. On the other hand, when we remember God's many mercies and great deeds on our behalf, we build an ongoing relationship of gratitude and trust. We can even remember our sins in the light of God's unconditional forgiveness and the good he is bringing out of situations that seemed to be disasters.
The Israelites knew this secret. Every year when they celebrated the Passover, they retold it as their own personal experience, even though the actual events occurred long ago. In today's Psalm, the singer reminds the people, "Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered"(Psalm 105:5).
And what if we, with our failing and fickle minds, forget what God has done for us? Not to worry. God's memory enfolds us. "He is mindful of his covenant forever"(Psalm 105:8). God never forgets his love! He continually speaks to us an effective, life-affirming word.

Help me to receive your word
into the core of my being,
and to share that life with all I meet."

“내 말을 지키는 이는 영원히 죽음을 보지 않을 것이다.”(요한 8,51)
예수님께서는 단 한 번에 죽음을 이겨내셨기 때문에 그분의 말씀은 언제나 생명을 줍니다. 그 말씀은 지금 우리를 살게 하며, 우리 안에 머물면서 자석처럼 우리를 영생으로 끌어당깁니다. 우리는 이 말씀을 가지고 생명을 주는 말들을 맞아들이고 나누는 데에 쓰거나, 죽음을 부르는 말들을 무시하고 물리치는 데에 쓸 수 있습니다.
날마다 우리가 듣는 말, 혼자서 중얼거리는 말, 다른 사람에게 하는 말 중에 많은 것들이 죽음과 관련된 말입니다. “전부 다 가지세요. 이걸 사시면 행복해질 거예요.” “이런 바보! 늘 일을 망쳐 놓는군.” “내가 뭘 기대한 거지? 아무도 날 상관하지 않는데 말야.”
예수님께서는 당신의 말씀을 지키는 사람은 죽지 않으리라고 약속하셨습니다. 당신은 어떤 말씀을 마음에 간직하고 입에 올립니까? 당신은 이 말씀들이 정말로 영생이나 죽음을 가져올 힘이 있다고 믿나요? 아마도 오늘이, 우리가 어떤 말을 마음에 품고 있는지, 어떤 말을 하는지, 그리고 이 말들이 우리 주위의 사람들에게 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아볼 수 있는 좋은 기회일 것 같습니다.
우리의 기억도 역시 삶이나 죽음의 매개체가 될 수 있습니다. 우리가 자신의 잘못이든 남의 잘못이든, 지난 잘못에만 초점을 맞추면, 과거는 몹시도 무거워져서 오늘을 위해 마련하신 하느님의 계획을 실행에 옮기지 못하게 방해합니다. 반대로, 하느님의 크신 자비와 우리를 위해 하신 수많은 위업을 기억할 때, 우리는 계속해서 감사와 신뢰의 관계를 쌓아나갈 수 있습니다. 나아가 재앙처럼 보이는 상황이라 해도 주님께서 그것으로부터 이끌어내시는 행복과 그분의 무조건적인 용서의 빛 안에서 우리의 죄를 되새겨볼 수 있습니다. 
이스라엘 백성은 이러한 비밀을 알고 있었습니다. 해마다 파스카를 기념하면서, 그들은 실제로는 오래 전에 일어난 사건이지만 마치 자신들이 직접 겪은 것처럼 되풀이하여 그 일을 이야기하였습니다. 오늘의 시편은 사람들에게 다음과 같이 상기시켜 줍니다. “그분께서 이루신 기적들을, 그 이적들과 그 입으로 내리신 판결들을 기억하여라.”(시편 105,5)
만일 나약하고 변덕스런 마음을 가진 우리가 하느님께서 우리에게 하신 일들을 잊는다면 어떻게 될까요? 걱정하지 마십시오. 하느님의 기억이 우리를 감싸고 있으니까요. 그분은 “당신의 계약을 영원히 기억하십니다.”(시편 105,8) 하느님께서는 결코 당신을 향한 사랑을 잊지 않으십니다! 그분은 쉼 없이 우리에게 감동을 주고 삶을 긍정케 하는 말씀을 해 주실 것입니다.

“예수님, 당신은 생명을 주는
하느님의 말씀이십니다!
당신은 저를 죽음에서 구하셨습니다.
제 존재의 한가운데로 당신 말씀을
받아들이고, 그 생명을 제가 만나는
모든 이들과 나눌 수 있도록 도와주십시오.”
