Jesus challenges his hearers with strong words. "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that testify on my behalf. Yet you refuse to come to me to have life.… You do not have the love of God in you"(John 5:39-40,42).
It's easy to apply such condemnations to other people. From politicians influenced by lobbyists to teenagers bowing to peer pressure, we all know people preoccupied with pleasing others. We may pity or even pray for such people, but Jesus' reference to Moses should bring us up short. In today's story from Exodus, God informs Moses that in his absence, the children of Israel have fallen into idolatry. He proposes to wipe them out and start all over again with Moses.
But instead of setting himself against his people, Moses identifies with them. He too is a sinner dependent on divine mercy, and he will not allow himself to take the place of Abraham, the true father of Israel.
This is the position of prophets and intercessors throughout Scripture. For instance, Daniel and his companions seem to be the only ones who have kept themselves undefiled from the corruptions of Babylon, yet he prays, "We have sinned and done wrong.…We do not present our suppli-cations before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies"(Daniel 9:5,18).
When we condemn others, we forget the depth of our own capacity for sin, and our total dependence on grace from beginning to end.
So how do you approach the word of God? Do you search the Scriptures in order to shore up a high opinion of yourself? Or do you humbly open yourself to Jesus, the living Word, who loves you? Today his word may convict, tomorrow it may bring comfort and approval. But that word is always addressed to you as a member of his people, all of whom share a fallen human natureand all of whom are objects of the Father's unconditional love and mercy.

my brothers and sisters,
who are simultaneously sinners and saints.
Like them, I need you.

이런 비판을 다른 사람들에게 적용하기는 쉽습니다. 로비스트에게 휘둘리는 정치가에서 또래 집단의 압력에 굴복하는 청소년들까지, 우리는 모두 타인에게 아부하기에 여념이 없는 사람들을 잘 알고 있습니다. 우리는 그런 사람들을 딱하게 여기거나 심지어 그들을 위해 기도할지 모릅니다. 그러나 예수님께서 모세를 들어 하신 말씀은 우리가 아직도 멀었다는 것을 보여 줍니다. 오늘 나오는 탈출기의 내용에서, 하느님께서는 모세가 없을 때 이스라엘의 자손들이 우상숭배에 빠졌다는 것을 모세에게 알리시면서, 그들을 다 없애시고 모세와 함께 새로 시작하겠다고 제안하십니다.
그러나 모세는 백성들의 반대편에 서기보다는 그들과 하나가 되었습니다. 자신도 주님의 자비에 맡겨진 죄인이므로, 이스라엘의 진정한 조상인 아브라함의 자리를 대신하지 않겠다고 하였습니다.
성경 전체를 통틀어 예언자들과 전구자들은 바로 이런 입장을 견지하고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 오로지 다니엘과 그의 동료들만이 바빌론의 부패에 물들지 않았던 것 같은데도, 다니엘은 이렇게 기도를 합니다. “저희는 죄를 짓고 불의를 저질렀으며 … 저희가 당신 앞에 간청을 올리는 것은 저희의 어떤 의로운 업적이 아니라, 당신의 크신 자비 때문입니다.”(다니 9,5.18)
우리는 다른 사람들을 비난할 때면, 우리 자신이 얼마나 큰 죄를 지을 수 있는지, 그리고 처음부터 끝까지 우리가 얼마나 전적으로 은총에 기대어 사는지 잊고 맙니다.
그런데 당신은 하느님의 말씀에 어떻게 다가갑니까? 당신이 자신에게 매기는 높은 점수를 고수하기 위해 성경을 뒤적이나요? 아니면, 당신을 사랑하는, 살아 계신 말씀이신 예수님께 당신을 겸손하게 드러내 보이나요? 주님의 말씀으로 어쩌면 오늘은 당신의 죄를 깨닫고, 내일은 위로받고 인정받을지도 모릅니다. 그러나 그 말씀은 주님의 백성인 당신에게 주님께서 늘 하시는 말씀입니다. 주님의 백성은 누구나 타락한 인간의 본성을 가지고 있으며, 또한 누구나 아버지의 무조건적인 사랑과 자비를 받는 존재이니까요.
“하느님의 말씀이신 예수님,
죄인이며 동시에 성인인 형제자매들과 더불어
제가 당신 앞에 나아갑니다.
그들처럼 저에게도 예수님이 필요합니다.
생명 그 자체보다 더 소중히 당신의 말씀을
간직하렵니다.” |
