수도승들의 종류에 대해 Of the Kinds or the Life of Monks
1 수도승들의 종류는 네 가지임이 분명하다. 2 첫째는 “회수도자”(會修道者)들이니, 그들은 수도원 안에서 살며, 규칙과 아빠스 밑에서 분투하는 이들이다.
It is well known that there are four kinds of monks. The first kind is that of Cenobites, that is, the monastic, who live under a rule and an Abbot.
3 그 다음, 둘째 종류는 “독수도자”(獨修道者) 또는 “은세수도자”(隱世修道者)들이다. 그들은 수도생활에 풋열심에서가 아니라, 수도원 안에서 오랫동안 훈련을 받고 나서 4 많은 형제들의 도움으로 악마와 대항하여 싸우는 법을 배우고, 5 잘 훈련되어 형 제들의 진지(陣地)로부터 나와 광야에서 단독으로 싸움을 함에 있어 이제는 다른 사람의 도움을 받지 않고 하느님의 도우심에 힘 입어 그들 자신의 손과 팔만으로써 육체와 생각의 악습을 거슬러 싸우기에 충분한 이들이다.
The second kind is that of Anchorites, or Hermits, that is, of those who, no longer in the first fervor of their conversion, but taught by long monastic practice and the help of many brethren, have already learned to fight against the devil; and going forth from the rank of their brethren well trained for single combat in the desert, they are able, with the help of God, to cope single-handed without the help of others, against the vices of the flesh and evil thoughts.
6 수도승들의 셋째 종류는 “사라바이따”라고 하는 극히 나쁜 자들이다. 그들은 용광로 안의 황금처럼 어떤 규칙이나 경험의 가르침으로 단련된 이들이 아니고, 납의 성질과 같이 물러 7 행실로써는 아직 세속에 충성을 지키면서도 삭발(削髮)로써 하느님을 속이는 것으로 알려진 자들이다. 8 그들은 둘이나 셋, 때로는 혼자서 목자도 없이, 주님의 양떼에서가 아니고 오직 자기네들의 무리 안에서 사는 자들이다. 그들의 법은 욕망의 쾌락이며, 9 자기들이 추정하고 선택한 것은 무엇이나 다 거룩하다고 하고 자기들이 원치 않는 것은 부당하다고 여긴다.
But a third and most vile class of monks is that of Sarabaites, who have been tried by no rule under the hand of a master, as gold is tried in the fire (cf Prov 27:21); but, soft as lead, and still keeping faith with the world by their works, they are known to belie God by their tonsure. Living in two's and three's, or even singly, without a shepherd, enclosed, not in the Lord's sheepfold, but in their own, the gratification of their desires is law unto them; because what they choose to do they call holy, but what they dislike they hold to be unlawful.
10 수도승들의 넷째 종류는 “기로바꾸스”(떠돌이 수도승)라고 불리우는 자들이다. 그들은 일생 동안 여러 지방을 돌아다니며 여러 암자에서 삼사 일씩 나그네로 묵고 11 항상 떠돌아 다니며 한번도 정주(定住)하지 않고, 자기의 뜻과 탐식에 빠진 자들로서, 모든 점에 있어 “사라바이따”들보다도 더 나쁜 자들이다.
But the fourth class of monks is that called Landlopers, who keep going their whole life long from one province to another, staying three or four days at a time in different cells as guests. Always roving and never settled, they indulge their passions and the cravings of their appetite, and are in every way worse than the Sarabaites.
12 비참하기 짝이 없는 이런 모든 자들의 수도생활에 대하여 말하느니보다는 차라리 침묵을 지키는 편이 더 낫겠다. 13 그러므로 이런 자들은 다 제쳐놓고 주의 도우심에 힘입어 그 가운데 가장 굳센 회수도자들을 다루어 나가고자 한다.
It is better to pass all these over in silence than to speak of their most wretched life. Therefore, passing these over, let us go on with the help of God to lay down a rule for that most valiant kind of monks, the Cenobites.
