"Blessed be God, and praised be his great name, and blessed be all his holy angels. May his holy name be praised throughout all the ages."(Tobit 11:14)
Tobit certainly had good reason to praise God. After a long absence, his only son has returned home safely, bringing back not only the money his father had feared he would never recover but also a virtuous bride who will keep his lineage alive. To top it all off, Tobiah has brought him a healing ointment, obtained from the angel Raphael, that cured him of his blindness. No wonder Tobit was so eloquent in his thanksgiving!
However, this was not Tobit's first prayer of praise. He seems to have made a lifetime habit of praise, practicing it in hard times as well as in good times. After he was stricken with blindness and chastised by his wife over a misunderstanding, Tobit offered a grief-stricken prayer of confession for his sins and the sins of his people, yet he still managed to glorify God: "You are righteous, O Lord, and all your deeds are just all your ways are mercy and truth; you are the judge of the world" (Tobit 3:2).
Tobit's words of praise are some of the most joyful in all of Scripture. Chapter 13 is nothing but praise, a "joyful prayer" to the God who "afflicts" and then "shows mercy" "As for me, I exalt my God, and my soul rejoices in the King of heaven" (Tobit 13:2,7). It's no surprise that he advised his son to follow in his footsteps: "Revere the Lord all your days, my son.… At all times bless the Lord God, and ask him that your ways may be made straight and that all your paths and plans may prosper" (Tobit 4:5,19).
When we experience God's blessings in our lives, it is appropriate ­ and easy ­ to offer him exuberant praise. However, the test of our character as believers is how we pray when we experience hardship. We should certainly tell God how we are feeling, as Tobit did. But we should praise him as well, remembering that he is Lord in every situation. He has promised that every circumstance in our lives will ultimately work for our good (Romans 8:28).

"Heavenly Father,
you deserve all praise and glory.
Transform me into a person of praise.
I want to bless you and trust in you
in all situations."

“하느님께서는 찬미받으소서. 그분의 위대한 이름은 찬미받으소서. 그분의 거룩한 천사들 모두 찬미받으소서. 그분의 위대한 이름 언제나 우리 위에 머무르소서. 그분의 천사들 모두 영원히 찬미받으소서.”(토빗 11,14)
토빗이 하느님을 찬양하는 것은 지극히 당연한 일이지요. 오랫동안 떨어져 있던 외아들 토비야가 무사히 집으로 돌아온 데다, 영영 되찾지 못할까 우려했던 돈을 가져온 것은 물론, 가문의 대를 이을 정숙한 신부까지 데리고 왔으니까요. 게다가 다른 무엇보다도 라파엘 천사에게서 얻은 연고를 가지고 와 눈이 멀었던 부친을 낫게 해 드렸으니, 토빗이 그토록 열렬히 하느님께 감사를 드린 것은 놀랄 일이 아닙니다!
그렇기는 하지만, 이 기도가 토빗이 처음 드린 찬미기도는 아니었습니다. 그에게 있어 찬미기도는 기쁠 때는 물론 어려울 때도 늘 실천해 온 평생의 생활 습관이었지요. 그는 눈이 멀고 오해로 인해 부인에게서 비난을 받은 후에 자신의 죄와 동족의 죄를 고백하는 비탄의 기도를 하느님께 올렸는데, 그때에도 토빗은 하느님께 드리는 찬미를 잊지 않았습니다. “주님, 당신께서는 의로우십니다. 당신께서 하신 일은 모두 의롭고 당신의 길은 다 자비와 진리입니다. 당신은 이 세상을 심판하시는 분이십니다.”(토빗 3,2) 하면서 말이지요.
토빗의 찬양 노래는 성경 전체에서도 가장 환희 넘치는 부분에 속합니다. 특히 13장은 전체가 ‘찬미기도’지요. 토빗은, ‘괴로움’도 주시지만 ‘자비’를 베풀기도 하시는 하느님께 ‘환희 가득한 찬미’를 드립니다. “나는 내 하느님을, 나의 영혼은 하늘의 임금님을 높이 받든다.”(토빗 13,2.7) 아들 토비야에게 자기 뒤를 따르라고 당부한 것 또한 놀랄 일이 아닙니다. “얘야, 평생토록 늘 주님을 생각하고 … 언제나 주 너의 하느님을 찬미하여라. 그리고 너의 길을 올바르게 해 주십사고, 너의 길과 뜻이 성공을 거두게 해 주십사고 그분께 간청하여라.”(토빗 4,5.19)
우리가 살면서 하느님의 축복을 경험할 때에는 그분을 열렬히 찬미하는 것이 마땅하기도 하려니와 어렵지 않은 일입니다. 그러나 신앙인으로서의 우리의 됨됨이는 곤경에 처해 있을 때 어떤 기도를 드리는가에서 드러납니다. 물론 우리도 토빗처럼 자신의 감정을 있는 그대로 하느님께 말씀드려야 하지만, 동시에 어떤 상황에서든지 그분께서 주님이심을 기억하며 찬미 드려야 합니다. 그분께서는 모든 것이 함께 작용하여 선을 이룰 것을 약속하셨습니다.(로마 8,28)

당신은 온갖 찬미와 영광을 받아 마땅한
분이시니, 저를 주님 찬양자로 변화시켜
주십시오. 당신을 찬미하고 어떤 상황에서도
당신을 신뢰하기 원합니다.”
