On the night before he died, Jesus prayed that his followers might be oneunited in the same kind of love that unites him and his Father (John 17:11). This unity must have been very import!ant to Jesus, since it occupied such an high place in his heart on so crucial a night! In fact, unity is at the heart of what Jesus accomplished on the cross. He died to bring about one church "one body through the cross" (Ephesians 2:16) in which all the redeemed love and esteem each other as brothers and sisters. And yet, as import!ant as unity is to Jesus, in the two millennia since his death, the church that he founded has repeatedly been rent by divisions.
As he lay dying of cancer, Blessed Pope John XXIII repeatedly whispered Jesus' own prayer, "May they all be one"(John 17:11). John had spent his life as bishop, cardinal, and pope reaching out across denominational barriers in an effort to reestablish the unity of God's people. "Whenever I see a wall between Christians," he once said, "I try to pull out a brick." In one of his daily talks, John XXIII declared:
"That they may be one." This is the divine Redeemer's purpose, and we must do our best to further it.… On the last day of the particular and universal judgment every individual will be asked, not whether he succeeded in restoring unity but whether he prayed, labored, and suffered for it .… and whether he gave full scope to impulses of love.
This prayer from Christ's heart must persuade us to renew and intensify our efforts, so that all Catholics may continue faithfully to love and to manifest the church's primary distinguishing mark, which is unity, and so that, in the vast and varied field of Christian denominations and beyond, there may be formed that unity so ardently desired by all honest and generous hearts.
Let's examine our own attitudes toward the divisions among the Christian people today. As followers of Christ, let's seek to be united with one another just as Jesus is united with the Father. May we embrace the spirit of unity and brotherhood that was so dear to John XXIII and pray that it might animate the church afresh.

예수님께서는 돌아가시기 전날 밤에, 당신을 따르는 이들이 하나가 되기를, 즉 예수님을 당신의 아버지와 하나가 되게 한 그 사랑 안에서 그들이 하나가 되기를 기도하셨습니다.(요한 17,11) 하나가 된다는 이 말은 예수님에게 있어서 매우 중요한 일이었음이 분명합니다. 그토록 결정적인 밤에 예수님의 마음이 온통 거기에 쏠려 있었으니까요! 사실상 ‘일치’는 예수님께서 십자가에서 이루신 일의 핵심입니다. 그분은 구원받은 모든 이들이 그 안에서 서로 사랑하고 서로를 형제자매로 여기는 하나의 교회를 이룩하려고, 곧 “십자가를 통하여 양쪽을 한 몸 안에서 하느님과 화해”시키고자(에페 2,16) 돌아가셨습니다. 그런데 예수님께서 그토록 일치를 중요시했는데도 불구하고, 그분이 돌아가신 지 이천 년이 지난 지금, 그분이 세우신 교회는 거듭되는 분열로 갈라져 있습니다.
복자이신 교황 요한 23세는 암으로 죽음을 앞두고 병상에 누워 있을 때, 예수님께서 바치신 “이들이 하나가 되게 해 주십시오.”(요한 17,11)라는 기도를 계속해서 읊조렸다고 합니다. 그분은 하느님 백성의 일치를 다시금 이룩하고자 하는 일념으로 종파의 장벽을 넘어 손길을 뻗는 데에 주교, 추기경, 교황으로서 자신의 일생을 헌신하신 분입니다. 언젠가는 이런 말씀을 한 적도 있지요. “나는 그리스도인들 사이에 놓인 벽을 볼 때마다 거기서 벽돌 한 장이라도 뽑아내려고 애쓴답니다.” 또 한 번은 매일의 담화를 통해 이렇게 천명하셨습니다. “‘이들이 하나가 되게 해 주십시오.’ 이것이 바로 거룩하신 구세주께서 목적하시는 바이며 우리도 있는 힘을 다해 이를 추구하여야 한다. … 개별적이며 보편적인 심판의 마지막 날에 모든 이가 받는 질문은, 그들이 성공적으로 일치를 회복하였나 하는 점이 아니라 일치를 위해서 기도하고 노력하고 고난을 받았는가 하는 점이며, … 사랑을 촉진하기 위해 할 수 있는 모든 일을 다 하였는가 하는 점이다.
그리스도의 마음에서 우러나오는 이 기도로써 우리의 노력을 새로이 하고 배가하여, 모든 그리스도인들이 계속하여 온 정성으로 서로 사랑하고 교회의 첫째가는 특징인 일치를 드러내 보이도록 하며, 광범위하고 다양한 그리스도교의 종파들 안에서 또한 그 너머에서도, 진실하고 고결한 마음을 지닌 사람들이 그러한 일치를 이루기를 열렬히 갈망하도록 만들어야 한다.”
오늘날 그리스도인들 사이에 가로놓인 분열에 대해 우리는 어떤 태도를 취하는지 한번 살펴봅시다. 우리는 그리스도를 따르는 사람들로서 예수님께서 하느님 아버지와 하나셨듯이 우리 사이에서도 서로 일치를 추구합시다. 교황 요한 23세께서 그토록 소중히 여기셨던 일치와 형제애의 정신을 우리도 끌어안음으로써 교회에 활력을 불어넣어 쇄신할 수 있도록 기도드립시다.
“하느님 아버지,
저희를 하나로 만들어 주십시오!
성자의 몸으로 이룩한 일치 안에서
저희를 하나로 모으게
당신의 성령을 보내 주십시오.”
