James and John were loyal followers of Jesus. They probably would have done anything he asked. But in a sense they were clueless about what he was really up to. Their request to sit beside him in heaven shows the degree to which their values were still influenced by the world around them, where prestige ruled the day. Their intentions were good, but they still had a lot to learn about being servants of God.
It wasn't only James and John, however, who had this problem. The other disciples were angry at them, probably because they also wanted to be where the action was. But Jesus didn't condemn any of them; instead, he took the opportunity to teach them about the nature of his kingdomwhoever wants to follow him must forget about being important in the eyes of the world. The one who wants to be great must learn to be last.
Every year at Lent, we have the opportunity to learn this lesson, too. It's a chance for us to re-focus our gaze on Christ and to sharpen our resolve to live no longer live for ourselves but for him. We may come into this season a bit like James and John: wanting to get closer to God and meaning well, but still needing to learn the way of the cross that Jesus walked. It's not bad to want to sit next to Jesus. But if we want to reign with him, we first need to learn how to "die" with him by turning from sin and embracing his life of trust and obedience to the Father.
At its heart, Lent is not about fasting, saying extra prayers, or doing a bunch of good deeds. These are only the means to the greater end, which is coming into a deeper relationship with Jesus. Jesus fixed his eyes on the cross, and he invites us to do the same. He knows that as we follow his example, untold blessings will flow into our lives: unbounded joy; peace in times of stress; freedom from sins; and best of all, intimacy with Almighty God himself. Who could have ever thought that so much good could come out of a call to die?

사도 야고보와 요한은 예수님의 충실한 제자들이었습니다. 그들은 예수님께서 이르시는 것은 무엇이나 다 했을 사람들입니다. 하지만 어떤 의미에서 그들은 정작 예수님께서 하시려는 것이 무엇인지 전혀 눈치 채지 못했습니다. 하늘 나라에서 예수님 옆에 앉게 해 달라고 부탁한 것을 보면, 그들의 가치관이 명성을 중시하던 그 당시 세상의 영향을 아직껏 벗어나지 못하고 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 그들의 의도는 좋았지만, 그들은 아직 하느님의 종이 된다는 것이 정말 무엇인지 배울 게 많았습니다.
그렇지만 그와 같은 문제를 안고 있는 제자들이 비단 야고보와 요한뿐만은 아니었습니다. 다른 제자들이 이 두 제자를 불쾌히 여긴 것을 미루어 볼 때, 그들 역시 같은 생각을 품고 있지 않았나 싶습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 그 누구도 비난하지 않으시고, 오히려 이를 하느님 나라의 본질이 무엇인지 가르치는 기회로 삼으셨습니다. 곧 당신을 따르고자 한다면 세상 사람들이 보기에 중요한 사람이 되기를 포기해야 한다는 것이지요. 높은 사람이 되고자 하는 자는 꼴찌가 되는 법을 배워야 한다고요.
해마다 사순 시기에, 우리도 이 가르침을 배우는 기회를 갖습니다. 사순 시기는 우리의 시선을 다시 그리스도께로 한데 모으고, 이제는 자신이 아니라 그분을 위해 살겠다고 굳게 다짐하는 기회입니다. 우리는 어느 정도 야고보와 요한처럼 이 시기를 맞을 수도 있습니다. 곧 하느님께 가까이 가기를 열망하고 좋은 뜻도 가졌지만, 아직도 예수님께서 걸으신 십자가의 길을 배울 필요가 있다는 말이지요. 예수님 옆에 앉고 싶어한다고 해서 잘못된 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 우리가 그분과 함께 왕좌에 앉기 원한다면, 아버지를 신뢰하며 그분께 순종하신 예수님의 삶을 받아들이고 죄에서 돌아섬으로써 그분과 함께 ‘죽는’ 법을 먼저 배워야 합니다.
사순 시기의 진수는, 단식을 한다거나, 기도를 보다 많이 바친다거나, 일련의 선행을 하는 것이 아닙니다. 이것들은 그보다 훨씬 더 큰 목표, 곧 예수님과 보다 깊은 관계에 들어가기 위한 방편일 뿐입니다. 예수님께서는 십자가만 바라보시면서 우리도 그와 같이 하도록 초대하십니다. 주님께서는 우리가 당신의 모범을 따를 때, 무한한 기쁨, 시련의 시기 중의 평화, 죄에서의 해방, 그리고 무엇보다 전능하신 하느님과의 친교 같은 무수한 축복이 우리 삶 안으로 흘러들어온다는 것을 알고 계십니다. 자기 목숨을 버리라는 부르심에서 이토록 큰 은총이 솟아나리라고 누가 감히 상상이나 했겠습니까?

언제나 주님의 뜻을 따를 준비가 되어 있는
