The Hidden God. The universe is a cosmos, not a chaos
"A people living in darkness has seen a great light." Matthew 4:16
It was winter of 1934. Admiral Richard E. Byrd had come to a bleak, icy shelf near the South Pole to obtain scientific data. But he also welcomed the opportunity to be by himself -- physically and spiritually. He wanted to reflect on life in perfect solitude.
He felt a deep need, a deep desire to believe.

One afternoon, he stood looking across the vast white expanse, feeling its immense power and admiring its awesome beauty. He listened to the stillness. He thought of the everlasting movement of the constellations across the heavens. He thought of the rhythmic change of the seasons.
He thought of all these things, and how they revealed a Master's Design. And suddenly, as his whole being was engulfed with an enormous sense of awe and wonder, he felt himself to be an integral part of it all. "I am not alone, the human race is not alone in the universe" he thought. Later, he wrote:
The conviction came that the rhythm was too orderly, to, to be a product of blind chance -- that, therefore, there must be purpose in the world. It was a feeling that transcended reason. It was a feeling that went to the heart of man's despair and found it groundless. The universe was a cosmos, not a chaos.
The author of the Old Testament Book of Job reveals himself as an intensely religious person who had lost contact with God. In his anguish he cried out,
Should He come near, I see Him not. Where then is my hope? Is there lasting meaning and purpose? And, if so, by whose arrangement, under whose direction? Who is my Lord? Where do I find my Lord and my God?
There are those times in life for all of us when we encounter this problem of the "hidden God."
"Where is God?" we ask.
One answer is that just as a great painting should remind us of the artist and a great monument should remind us of the architect, so too everything in this world should, in some way, remind us of our Creator.
God made the kind of world in which the spiritual dimension is constantly being revealed through the material dimension.
The Divine is constantly being revealed through the human. The Eternal is constantly being revealed through the passage of time.
The universe, according to God's plan, is transparent like a window.
And according to that plan, a mountain is not just a mountain, but the revelation of the power of God; a sunset is not just a sunset, but the revelation of the beauty of God; a snowflake is not just a snowflake, but the revelation of the purity of God.
It doesn't end there, of course. God revealing himself in mountains and sunsets and snowflakes is only the beginning.
God's design makes it possible for us to capture our best glimpse of Him in the Lord Jesus and in one another. Through Christ, and through one another, we can see the Divine!
If God appears to be missing from the world, it is not because He isn't here, it is because we are looking for Him in the wrong places.
The prophet Elijah looked in vain for God in many different places, only to discover Him unexpectedly in a whispering voice. This is a Biblical Lesson that recurs over-and-over again until it climaxes as the Divine whisper heard the world over, when the Word becomes flesh and dwells among us in God's supreme act of self-revelation.
Jesus is our supreme example of how God shows Himself to us in unexpected ways.
"See Me in this house of worship," says the Lord, "but see Me also in all the many faces of mankind. For My two great commandments are made one in the Person of My Divine Son who now commands: 'Love one another as I have loved you.' Do this, in His Name and you will know your God!"
"A people living in darkness has seen a great light," we read in today's Gospel Lesson.
Out of this terrible darkness I cry to You, Lord:
Give me hope! Give me peace of mind!
Give me light!
The beautiful thing about human life is that God does give us light.
God gives a great light for all His people who are living in darkness to see!
There is a parable about a man who was riding on a train but didn't know where he was going. There was good companionship among the passengers: they talked and laughed and made plans together for the days ahead. And there was music.
It was a good trip, except that, now and then, a beloved fellow passenger would suddenly leave the train. The man who didn't know his own destination wept whenever a friend would leave. "It isn't fair. If we could only know where they are going and what they are doing!"
Then, one day, he felt a tapping on his shoulder and, in an instant, he was standing on a station platform, the train roaring away in the distance. All around him were familiar faces, friends from the past who had come to welcome him. All around him there was peace, beauty and light -- beyond the limits of the stuffy train.
The man could feel an awesome, wonderful Presence beside him and he cried out: "Why weren't we told it would be like this?"
To which a gentle voice replied, "My son, if you had known your destination and the littleness of your journey, would you have troubled to discover the meaning of life in the beauty of nature, in good relationships, in good friends, in good times, in good feelings, in good music and art and literature and all the rest?"
"A people living in darkness has seen a great light."
Follow that light and you will find meaning in this moment of time.
You will find that you can trust absolutely in the larger meaning that made it all possible.
Follow the light and you will find the hidden God waiting to welcome you into His Kingdom of Love!

숨어계신 하느님. 우주는 질서있는 체계(cosmos)이지 혼돈(chaos)이 아니다.
“어둠속에 앉아있는 백성이 큰빛을 보았다.” (마태 4:16)
1934년 겨울이었읍니다. 함대사령관인 리차드이버드(미국해군장교, 극지탐험가)는 과학연구자료수집차 남극 근처의 황페한 얼음판에 갔었습니다. 그러나 그는 육체적으로도 또한 영적으로 혼자 있을 수 있는 기회를 갖게 된 것이 기뻤읍니다. 그는 완전히 고독한 상태에서 삶에대해 생각해보고 싶었던 것입니다.
그는 믿음이 절실히 필요했고 또한 간절히 원했습니다.
그는 하느님을 찾고 있었던 것입니다!
어느날 오후, 그는 드넓고 흰눈에 덮여 펼쳐진 광활한 얼음턱을 바라보고 서 있자니, 거대한 힘을 느낄 수 있었으며, 위엄있는 그 아름다움에 감탄을 금할 수가 없었습니다. 그는 모든 것이 정지된 듯한 고요함에 귀기우려 보았읍니다. 끊임없이 움직이고 있는 하늘의 별자리를 그는 생각했고, 규칙적으로 순환하는 사계절을생각했습니다.
그가 이 모든것을 곰곰히 생각해보니, 그 모든것들은 하느님의 뜻을 드러내고 있는 것이었읍니다. .그런데갑자기, 그의 온존재가 엄청나게 경외롭고 놀라움에 휩싸이면서 자신이 그 모든것에서 빠질 수 없는 필수의존재라는 것을 느꼈읍니다. 내가 독불장군이 아니듯, 우주안에서 인류도 혼자가 아니야.”라는 생각이 들었습니다. 후에 그는 이렇게 적었습니다”
너무나 질서가 정연한 것을보면 아무 목적없이 우연히 생겨난 것이 아니다-그러니까 세상은 틀림없이 목적이 있을 것이라는 확신이 들었다. 그것은 이성을 초월한 느낌이었다. 그 느낌은 인간 절망속에 들어가 보니, 그 절망의 근거가 없더라는 그런 느낌이었다. 우주는 질서 정연한 체계이지 혼돈이 아니었다.
구약의 욥기 저자는지극히 종교족인 사람인데 하느님과의 연락이 끊겼다고 말합니다. 그는 화가나서 소리지릅니다,
그분께서 내앞을 지나 가셔도 나는 보지 못하고. 그렇다면 나의 희망은 어디에 있는가? 영원한 의미와 목적이 있기나한가? 있다면 누구의 주선아래, 누구의 지시로? 누가 나의 주님이신가? 어디에서 내주님이시요 나의 하느님을 찾을수가 있단말인가?
우리 모두는 살아가는 동안“숨어 계시는 하느님”을 당면하게 되는 시기가 있습니다.
“하느님은 어디에 계십니까?” 라고 우리는 묻습니다.
한가지 대답은, 위대한 그림을 보면 그 화가가 누구인지를 알고, 위대한 유적을 보면 그것을 지은 건축가를압니다. 마찬가지로, 이 세상에 있는 만물 역시 어떤식으로든 우리의 창조주를 생각나게 해줍니다, 라는 것입니다.
하느님은 세상에서 영적인 차원을 물질적인 차원을 통해서 끊임없이 계시를 하십니다.
신은 끊임없이 사람을 통해서 당신을 드러내십니다. 하느님의 영원성은 지나가는 시간을 통해서 끊임없이드러내십니다.
하느님 계획에 따른 우주는 창문처럼 투명합니다.
그리고 그 계획에 따르면, 산은 그냥 산이 아니고, 하느님 권능의 계시입니다; 일몰은 그냥 일몰이 아니라 하느님의 아름다움을 보여 주시는 것입니다; 눈송이는 그냥 눈송이가 아니라 하느님의 순수함을 계시하는 것입니다.
물론 그것으로 끝이 아닙니다. 하느님께서 산과 일몰과 눈발에서 당신을 드러내시는 것은 겨우 시작에 불과합니다.
하느님께서 계획하신바에 따르면 우리가 주님이신 예수님과 이웃안에서 가장 잘 하느님의 모습을 희미하게나마 감지할 수 있도록 하셨읍니다. 그리스도를 통하여,그리고 서로를 통하여 우리는 하느님을 볼 수가 있습니다!
하느님이 이 세상에 계시지 않은듯 할때는 하느님이 계시지 않는 것이 아니라, 우리가 엉뚱한데서 그분을 찾고 있었기 때문입니다.
예언자 엘리야는 하느님을 찾느라 헛되이 여러 곳을 찾다가 예기치 않게 하느님의 속삭이시는 소리를 듣고하느님을 찾았읍니다. 성서의 이 가르침은 계속 되풀이 되어오다가ㅡ말씀이 사람이 되시어 우리 가운데 계심으로써, 당신을 드러내시는 최고의 계시를 하시고, 온 세상이 하느님의 속삭임을 듣게 하심으로써 절정을이루십니다.
예수님은 우리가 예기치 못한 방법중 가운데 하느님께서 당신을 드러내 보이신 최상의 예입니다.
“이 교회안에서 나를 보아라,” 라고 주님은 말씀하십니다. “그러나 인류의 모든 얼굴에서 또한 나를 보아라. 나의 두가지 계명이:’내가 너를 사랑하듯이 서로 사랑하여라.’ 라고 말하는 나의 성자인품안에서 하나가되었으니 그의 이름으로 이를 행하여라 그러면 너희는 너희 하느님을 알게 될것이다!”
“어둠속에 앉아있는 백성이 큰빛을 보았다.”하신 말씀을 오늘 복음 가르침에서 우리는 봅니다.
이 무시무시한 어둠속에서 저는 당신께 부르짓습니다, 주님:
저에게 희망을 주십시요! 저에게 마음의 평화를 주십시요!
저에게 빛을 주십시요!
인간의 삶에서 아름다운 것은 하느님께서 빛을 주신다는 것입니다.
하느님은 어둠속에 살고있는 당신의 모든 백성에게 볼 수 있도록 큰빛을 주십니다!
행선지도 모르고 기차를 타고가는 어떤 사람에 대한 우화가 있읍니다. 승객들끼리 잘 지내고들 있었읍니다: 그들은 함께 이야기하고 웃으면서 함께 다가오는 날들을 계획하고 있었읍니다. 음악도 들렸읍니다.
,이따금 사랑하는 동료승객이 한사람씩 갑짜기 내리는 것을 빼고는 좋은 여행이었읍니다. 자신의 행선지를 모르는 이 사나이는 친구가 떠날때마다 “말도안돼. 그들이 어디로 가서 무엇을 하는지를 알수라도 있었으면.” 하면서 울었읍니다.
그러던 어느날, 누군가가 자기 어깨를 가볍게 치는 것 같더니, 금세 그는 어느 역 플렛폼에 서있었고, 기차는 멀리서 기적을 울리며 가고 있었습니다. 돌아보니, 주위에는 모두 아는 얼굴들로서, 과거의 친구들이 그를 마중하러 나와 있었읍니다. 그의 주위는 평화스럽고 아름웠으며, 빛이 있었습니다.- 한정되고 갑갑한 기차안이 아니었습니다.
경이롭고 놀라우신 하느님이 옆에 계심을 느낄수가 있었던 그는 “왜 이럴것이라고 아무도 미리말해주지 않았읍니까?” 하고 소리질렀읍니다.
그 말에 부드러운 목소리가 대답했읍니다. “아들아, 너의 행선지와 그리고 여정이 얼마나 짧은지를 알고 있었더라도, 너는 자연의 아름다움, 좋은 관계들, 좋은 친구들, 재미있는 시간들, 좋은 감정들, 좋은음악, 그리고 예술, 문학과 그외의 모든것 안에서 삶의 의미를 알아내려고 너는 애써 노력을 했을것같으냐?" 라고.
“어둠속에 앉아있는 백성이 큰빛을 보았다.”
그 빛을 따라 가십시요. 그러면 이 시점의 의미를 알게 될것입니다.
모든 것을 가능하게 하신 보다 크신 뜻 안에서 여러분은 정말 믿을 수 있음을 알게 될것입니다.
빛을 따라 가십시요. 당신 사랑의 왕국으로 여러분을 맞아 드리려고 숨어 기다리시는 하느님을 찾게 될것입니다!
