아가페는 다른 사람의 행복만을 추구하는 헌신적인 사랑을 의미합니다.
반면 에로스는 자신에게 부족한 것을 채우려는 욕망, 이성 간의 육체적인 사랑을 의미합니다.
하느님이 우리에게 주시는 사랑은 물론 아가페입니다.
사실 인간이 하느님께 무엇을 드릴 수 있겠습니까?
하느님께서 갖고 계시지 않은 것이 과연 있겠습니까?
그 어떤 사람도, 우리가 가진 그 어떤 것도 하느님의 선물이기 때문입니다.
아무리 생각해보아도 하느님께서 우리를 필요로 하는 것이 아니라 우리가 하느님을 필요로 합니다.
그러나 하느님 사랑은 에로스이기도 합니다.
구약성경을 보면 하느님께서는 선택하신 백성에게 인간으로서는 도저히 이해할 수 없는 각별한 사랑을 드러냅니다.
젊은 남자가 연인의 승낙을 기다리듯, 전능하신 하느님께서는 당신 피조물이 당신 부르심에 "예"라고 응답하기를 기다리십니다. 
하느님께서는 우리들로부터 사랑받는 것에 목말라 있습니다.
내가 사랑해주기를, 네가 사랑해주기를 애타게 기다리고 있습니다.
우리는 분명히 말할 수 있습니다. 
인간을 향해 보여주시는 하느님의 에로스는 사실상 하느님께서 사장 잘 나타내주신 아가페라고...

The term asape, which appears many times in the New Testament, indicates the self-giving love of one who looks 
exclusively for the good of the other. The word eros, on the other hand, denotes the love of one who desires to possess what he or she lacks and yearns for union with the beloves. The love which God surrounds us is undoubtedly agape. Indeed, can man give to God some good that he does not already posses? All that the human craeture is and has is divine gift.  It is the creature, then, who is ned of God in everything. But God's love is also eros. In the Old Testament, the Creator of the universe manifests toward the people whom he has chosen as his own a predilection that transcends every human motivation. These biblical texts indicate that eros is part of God's very Heart: the Alimighty awaits the "yes" of his creatures as a young bridegroom that of his bride. He is thirsty for the love of every one of us. One could rightly say that the revelation of God's eros toward man is, in reality, the supreme expression of his agape.
