23For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 25In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.(1 Co 11:23-26) ▶ ENGLISH BIBLE ◀
The Catholic high school debate team contestants were asked, "What is the most critical sacrament in the Church?" Team One opened with their argument: "The most import!ant sacrament is the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith. Jesus himself said that without the Bread of Life, we will die from spiritual malnourishment."
Team Two responded: "No. Reconciliation is the most import!ant sacrament. Who among us can live a holy life without the mercy and forgiveness of God? Receiving the Eucharist from Jesus' own hands did not do Judas Iscariot much good. What effect will the Eucharist have upon us if we are bound by sin?"
Finally, Team Three responded: "The most critical sacrament is neither Reconciliation nor the Eucharist. It is Baptism. Without Baptism, all of the other sacraments have no place in our lives. The unbaptized are not cleansed from original sin, and so they are not members of the church. They cannot receive the Eucharist or any other sacrament." How would you respond? In a sense, the question could be debated forever. The arguments made by each team have a lot of weight, and we would be wrong to dismiss any of them.
As we celebrate this great feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, let's ask how we respond to each of these sacraments. For Baptism: This seed that was planted in us has raised us from death to life (Romans 6:4,6). So let's thank Jesus for raising us up by the power of his grace. For Reconciliation: Let's make sure we are right with the Lord and that no sin is impeding our relationship with him. Let's repent and be reconciled with Jesus. For the Eucharist: Let's receive Jesus today and let the gift of his body and blood nourish our baptismal seed so that we are changed into his likeness. In every aspect of our Christian lives, let's yield to the Lord and let him do whatever he wants to do in us.
"Lord Jesus, change me.
For my part, I thank you
for the gift of baptism
and I repent for all of my sins."
