The story of the Prodigal Son could easily take first prize in a short story contest. Luke(루가) has woven(mixed) so many different and touching themes into this one remarkable story. Read it again carefully, paying close attention to what is happening to each of the persons you find there.
The heart is an image of what is most personal about ourselves. Just as it is important for our health to have our physical heart examined, so we need to look at our spiritual heart. Let's look briefly at the hearts of the three people in the story: the two sons and the father. The younger son had a restless, selfish, uncaring heart. By asking for his inheritance from his father, he was saying he wanted out. He wanted the money, not the precious relationship with his father.
The older son's heart disease was of a different kind. His was closed, filled with resentment, jealousy and envy. His heart wasn't open to expperience the good things that were happening to his brother. His focus was only on himself.
And finally we come to the heart of the father. What a healthy heart he had. He accepted both his sons and even though he did not agree with what they did, he loved them both. This is the heart which God shows to each of us. There is nothing that we have done that will keep us out of his heart.
