형제보다 더 가까이 네 곁에 머물 것이다.

생의 절반을 바쳐서라도 그런 사람을 찾을 필요가 있다.

그 사람이 너를 발견하기를 기다리지 말고.

구백아흔아홉 사람은 세상 사람들이 바라보는 대로

너를 바라볼 것이다. 하지만 그 천 번째 사람은 언제까지나 너의 친구로 남으리라.

세상 모두가 너에게 등을 돌릴지라도.

그 만남은 목적이나 겉으로 내보이기 위한 것이 아닌

너를 위한 진정한 만남이 되리라.

천 사람 중의 구백아흔아홉 사람은 떠나갈 것이다.

너의 표정과 행동에 따라, 또는 네가 무엇을 이루는가에 따라.

그러나 네가 그 사람을 발견하고 그가 너를 발견한다면

나머지 사람들은 문제가 아니리라.

그 천 번째 사람이 언제나 너와 함께 물 위를 헤엄치고

물속으로도 기꺼이 가라앉을 것이기에.

 

때로 그가 너의 지갑을 사용할 수도 있지만

넌 더 많이 그의 지갑을 사용할 수 있으리라.

많은 이유를 대지 않고서도.

그리고 날마다 산책길에서 웃으며 만나리라.

마치 서로 빌려 준 돈 따위는 없다는 듯이.

구백아흔아홉 사람은 거래할 때마다 담보를 요구하리라.

하지만 천 번째 사람은

그들 모두를 합친 것보다 더 가치가 있다. 너의 진실한 감정을 그에게는 보여 줄 수 있으므로.

 

그의 잘못이 너의 잘못이고,

그의 올바름이 곧 너의 올바름이 되리라.

태양이 비칠 때나 눈비가 내릴 때나.

구백아흔아홉 사람은 모욕과 비웃음을 견디지 못할 것이다.

하지만 그 천 번째 사람은 언제나 네 곁에 있으리라.

함께 죽음을 맞이하는 한이 있더라도.

그리고 그 이후에도.
